The monitoring of Human Herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation has proven to be useful in preventing life-threatening complications; however, the pathogenic role of HHV-6 after autologous transplantation is not well-characterized, although viral reactivation might be responsible for significant complications even after this type of transplant. Here we report, for the f...

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a potentially immunosuppressive agent that has been suggested to act as a cofactor in the progression of human immunodeficiency virus disease. However, the lack of suitable experimental models has hampered the elucidation of the mechanisms of HHV-6-mediated immune suppression. Here, we used ex vivo lymphoid tissue to investigate the cellular tropism and pathogenic...

Twenty two cases of human herpesvirus 7 (HHV-7) infection are described. HHV-7 infection occurred later than human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection and induced exanthem subitum in 47.1% of the children. HHV-7 infection was associated with exanthem subitum and the other symptoms that were observed in HHV-6 infection.

Human herpesvirus-6 (HHV-6) is a T lymphotropic herpesvirus belonging to the Betaherpesvirinae subfamily. HHV-6 was long classified into variants A and B (HHV-6A and HHV-6B); however, recently, HHV-6A and HHV-6B were reclassified as different species. The process of herpesvirus entry into target cells is complicated, and in the case of HHV-6A and HHV-6B, the detailed mechanism remains to be elu...

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) is a lymphotropic betaherpesvirus that productively infects T cells and monocytes. HHV-6 isolates can be differentiated into two groups, variants A and B (HHV-6A and HHV-6B). Here, we show a functional difference between HHV-6A and -6B in that HHV-6A induced syncytium formation of diverse human cells but HHV-6B did not. The syncytium formation induced by HHV-6A was o...

BACKGROUND A possible but as yet unproven relationship has been proposed between the onset or persistence of multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms and herpesviruses, including, most recently, human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6). A study was conducted to investigate the presence of HHV-6 DNA and the synthesis of antibodies against HHV-6, cytomegalovirus (CMV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in serum and cerebro...

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) infection in recipients of cord blood stem cell transplants (CBSCTs) was estimated by semiquantitative and real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse-transcription PCR. Of the CBSCT recipients, 7 (70%) of 10 had active HHV-6 infection after transplantation, and all 7 were inferred from their age to have already had a primary infection. Because...

Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) has been implicated as a cofactor in the progressive loss of CD4(+) T cells observed in AIDS patients. Because dendritic cells (DC) play an important role in the immunopathogenesis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, we studied the infection of DC by HHV-6 and coinfection of DC by HHV-6 and HIV. Purified immature DC (derived from adherent peripheral blood ...
