Aggressive carcinomas ferment glucose to lactate even in the presence of oxygen. This particular metabolism, termed aerobic glycolysis, the glycolytic phenotype, or the Warburg effect, was discovered by Nobel laureate Otto Warburg in the 1920s. Since these times, controversial discussions about the relevance of the fermentation of glucose by tumours took place; however, a majority of cancer res...
Ensiling is a method of preserving a moist crop. A moist crop can support the growth of a wide range of microorganisms, most of which will degrade the nutrient value to livestock. However, ensiling generally controls microbial activity by a combination of an anaerobic environment and a natural fermentation of sugars by lactic acid bacteria on the crop. This fermentation and the resulting low pH...
BACKGROUND Growth conditions that bring about stress on Phaffia rhodozyma cells encourage the synthesis of astaxanthin, an antioxidant carotenoid, which protects cells against oxidative damage. Using P. rhodozyma cultures performed with and without copper limitation, we examined the kinetics of astaxanthin synthesis along with the expression of asy, the key astaxanthin synthesis gene, as well a...
The influence of growth conditions on product formation from glucose by Lactococcus lactis strain NZ9800 engineered for NADH-oxidase overproduction was examined. In aerobic batch cultures, a large production of acetoin and diacetyl was found at acidic pH under pH-unregulated conditions. However, pyruvate flux was mainly driven towards lactate production when these cells were grown under strictl...
Practical removal of radioactivity from polluted soil in Fukushima, Japan was done using a photosynthetic bacterium, Rhodobacter sphaeroides SSI, immobilized in alginate beads. The beads were put in a mesh bag and soaked in which soil was suspended (5 kg of soil/10 L of tap water). The radioactivity of the broth decreased by 31% after 15 d of aerobic treatment. When lactic acid bacterial cultur...
Corynebacterium nuruki S6-4(T), isolated from Korean alcohol fermentation starter, is a strictly aerobic, nonmotile, Gram-positive, and rod-shaped bacterium belonging to the genus Corynebacterium and the actinomycete group. We report here the draft genome sequence of C. nuruki strain S6-4(T) (3,106,595 bp, with a G+C content of 69.5%).
The roles of the two ldh genes of Enterococcus faecalis were studied using knockout mutants. Deletion of ldh-1 causes a metabolic shift from homolactic fermentation to ethanol, formate, and acetoin production, with a high level of formate production even under aerobic conditions. Ldh-2 plays only a minor role in lactate production.
Comparative assays demonstrated that the probability of error was 12.1% when testing the aerobic fermentation of trehalose by coagulase negative staphylococci when this carbohydrate was added to the medium prior to sterilization whereas the error was only 2.7% in media if filtered trehalose was added subsequent to steam sterilization of the medium.
Salmonella typhimurium excreted the rhamnose fermentation product 1,2-propanediol not only under anaerobic conditions, but also under aerobic conditions. The absence of an aldehyde dehydrogenase enzymatic activity that oxidizes to lactate the lactaldehyde formed in the dissimilation of rhamnose raised the intracellular concentration of the aldehyde which was alternatively reduced to the excreta...
The sequences of the untranslated regions (UTRs) of mRNAs play important roles in posttranscriptional regulation, but whether a change in UTR length can significantly affect the regulation of gene expression is not clear. In this study, we examined the connection between UTR length and Expression Correlation with cytosolic ribosomal proteins (CRP) genes (ECC), which measures the level of expres...
