We report a case of early-onset acute Guillain-Barre syndrome associated with reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection after nonmyeloablative stem cell transplantation (NST). Reactivation of EBV infection preceded disease onset, and the virus load increased concomitantly with disease progression (doubling time, 2.7 days). This case raises concern about the expanding scope of manifesta...

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) oriP and the EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) protein allow persistence of EBV-based episomes. A nuclear matrix attachment region (MAR) spans oriP and the adjacent region of the EBV genome containing the EBV-expressed RNAs. Here, we show that episomes with the MAR are retained significantly more efficiently in EBV-positive B cells than episomes containing oriP alone.

CT: computed tomography EBER-ISH: Epstein-Barr viruseencoded RNA in situ hybridization EBV: Epstein-Barr virus LYG: lymphomatoid granulomatosis INTRODUCTION Lymphomatoid granulomatosis (LYG) is a rare B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder that involves the skin in approximately 50% of cases. We describe a patient with LYG who first presented with cutaneous lesions. His skin biopsy failed to show ...

Epstein-Barr virus is known to cause nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Although oral cavity is located close to the nasal pharynx, the pathogenetic role of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in oral cancers is unclear. This molecular epidemiology study uses EBV genomic microarray (EBV-chip) to simultaneously detect the prevalent rate and viral gene expression patterns in 57 oral squamous cell carcinoma biopsies ...

Abstract   Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disease of central nervous system with destruction of myelin sheath mediated by auto reactive CD4+ T Lymphocytes. Because of the possible role of Epstein-Barr virus in etiology of MS and T cells immune response, the aim of this study was to evaluate anti-Epstein Barr virus antibodies as a marker of reactivity and p...

Burkitt lymphoma (BL) is an aggressive neoplasm characterized by consistent morphology and phenotype, typical clinical behavior and distinctive molecular profile. The latter is mostly driven by the MYC over-expression associated with the characteristic translocation (8;14) (q24; q32) or with variant lesions. Additional genetic events can contribute to Burkitt Lymphoma pathobiology and retain cl...

Persistent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection remains asymptomatic in the majority of virus carriers, despite the potent growth transforming potential of this virus. The increased frequency of EBV associated B cell lymphomas in immune compromised individuals suggests that tumor-free chronic infection with this virus is in part due to immune control. Here we discuss the evidence that loss of sel...

The recent derivation of otherwise isogenic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) recombinants carrying or lacking the EBV small RNA (EBER) genes enabled us to test whether EBERs are similar to adenovirus VA RNAs in modulating interferon (IFN) effects on virus infection. EBER-positive and -negative EBV recombinants did not differ in their sensitivity to alpha interferon (IFN-alpha)- or IFN-gamma-mediated in...

Reactivation of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) from latency to the lytic cycle is required for the production of viral particles. Here, we examine the capacity of resveratrol to inhibit the EBV lytic cycle. Our results show that resveratrol inhibits the transcription of EBV immediate early genes, the expression of EBV lytic proteins, including Rta, Zta, and EA-D and reduces viron production, suggesti...

Maribavir (MBV) inhibits Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) replication and the enzymatic activity of the viral protein kinase BGLF4. MBV also inhibits expression of multiple EBV transcripts during EBV lytic infection. Here we demonstrate, with the use of a BGLF4 knockout virus, that effects of MBV on transcription take place primarily through inhibition of BGLF4. MBV inhibits viral genome copy numbers a...
