Manipulating the electronic properties of graphene has been a subject great interest since it can aid material design to extend applications many different areas. In this paper, we systematically investigate effect lead (Pb) intercalation on structural and epitaxial SiC(0001) substrate. We show that band structure Pb-intercalated few-layer be effectively tuned through changing conditions, such ...

Abstract. Using temperature-salinity profiles obtained from a cruise in summer 2000, the structure and formation of the barrier layer (BL) in the South China Sea (SCS) are investigated. Fresh water flux, ocean circulation, and wind stirring are important for BL formation, depending on regions. In the eastern SCS, Philippine mountains induce heavy rainfall, resulting in a fresh water cap at the ...

OBJECTIVE To assess the presence of early bladder abnormalities in a prenatally corrected and uncorrected animal model of Myelomeningocele (MMC). METHOD A MMC-like lesion was surgically created in 18 fetal lambs between the 60th and the 80th day of gestation. Eight of them did not undergo fetal repair (group A), three were repaired with an open two-layer closure (group B), three using BioGlue...

Laminin and collagen IV are components of most basal laminae (BLs). Recently, both have been shown to be products of multigene families. The A, B1, and B2 subunits of the laminin trimer are products of related genes, and the BL components merosin M and s-laminin are homologues of the A and B1 subunits, respectively. Similarly, five related collagen IV chains, alpha 1(IV)-alpha 5(IV), have been ...

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignant tumor of the skin, which originates from the basal cell layer of the skin. It is more common in white race with skin types I and II. Some predisposing factors are sunlight, ionizing radiation, arsenic salts, PUVA and scar. We present a case of BCC, which appeared over an old scar of localized cutaneous leishmaniasis in a 49-year-old woman.

There has been increasing concern regarding the cosmetic aspects of skin in recent years. Computational simulation can be useful in understanding the mechanism underlying skin formation. The bottom of the epidermis is called the basal layer and is very undulation. In this study, we focus on the basal layer formation. We created a particle model, which forms an undulation basal layer and regener...

BRCA1/p220-assocaited and triple negative/basal-like (TN/BL) tumors are aggressive and incurable breast cancer diseases that share among other features the no/low BRCA1/p220 expression. Here we show that BRCA1/p220 silencing in normal human mammary epithelial (HME) cells reduces expression of two RNA-destabilizing proteins, namely AUF1 and pCBP2, both proteins bind and destabilize BRCA1-IRIS mR...

We consider a nominally steady and two-dimensional turbulent boundary layer (BL) of uniform density along a flat surface under the action of an adverse pressure gradient. Classical analysis of the flow in the limit of large Reynolds number, Re → ∞, (a survey is found e.g. in [2]) predicts the well-known asymptotically small velocity defect holding within most of a strictly attached BL. However,...

We compare a full-year (2006) record of surface air NO2 concentrations measured in Israeli cities to coinciding retrievals of tropospheric NO2 columns from satellite sensors (SCIAMACHY aboard ENVISAT and OMI aboard Aura). This provides a large statistical data set for validation of NO2 satellite measurements in urban air, where validation is difficult yet crucial for using these measurements to...

What determines the vertical distribution of phytoplankton in different aquatic environments remains an open question. To address this question, we develop a model to explore how phytoplankton respond through growth and movement to opposing resource gradients and different mixing conditions. We assume stratification creates a well-mixed surface layer on top of a poorly mixed deep layer and nutr...
