A gold-catalyzed oxidation of arylallenes to form α-diketones and aldehydes in good yields is presented. Further directed synthesis of quinoxalines and benzimidazoles, via the condensation of the resulting α-diketones and aldehydes with benzene-1,2-diamine, was achieved in high yields.

2-Chloromethyl-5H/methyl benzimidazoles were condensed with different 2-substituted 5-mercapto-1,3,4-oxadiazoles and thiadiazoles, and 4-amino 2-substituted 5-mercapto-1,2,4-triazoles. The synthesized compounds were characterized and evaluated for their fungicidal activities, and few were found to be better fungicides than those commercially used.

Cobalt(ii)-complex catalyzes efficiently the intramolecular C-N and C-O cross-couplings of Z-N'-(2-halophenyl)-N-phenylamidines and N-(2-bromophenyl)benzamides to afford the corresponding substituted benzimidazoles and benzoxazoles in the presence of K(2)CO(3) at moderate temperature. The protocol is general, air stable and affords the products selectively in moderate to high yield.

The synthesis of benzimidazoles by intermolecular cyclization reaction of 2-iodoanilines with nitriles has been developed. These reactions proceeded without the aid of any transition metals or ligands and just using KOBu(t) as the base. A variety of substituted benzimidazole derivatives can be synthesized by the approach.

An efficient one-pot oxidation/condensation tandem process has been developed for the synthesis of 2-substituted benzimidazole derivatives from benzylic alcohols and 1,2-phenylenediamine with use of urea-hydrogen peroxide/silica phosphoric acid  as a bifunctional catalyst.
