The interaction between elasticity and capillarity is used to produce three-dimensional structures through the wrapping of a liquid droplet by a planar sheet. The final encapsulated 3D shape is controlled by tailoring the initial geometry of the flat membrane. Balancing interfacial energy with elastic bending energy provides a critical length scale below which encapsulation cannot occur, which ...

This work is devoted to prove the existence of global weak solution for a general isothermal model of capillary fluids derived by J.E Dunn and J.Serrin (1985) (see [18]), which can be used as a phase transition model. More precisely we shall derive in a first part new entropy estimates for the density when we are dealing with specific capillarity coefficient κ(ρ) = 1 ρ (let us emphasize on the ...

We show that singular sets of free boundaries arising in codimension one anisotropic geometric variational problems are Hn−3-negligible, where n is the ambient space dimension. In particular our results apply to capillarity type problems, and establish everywhere regularity in the three-dimensional case.

We study a fully inertial model of a martensitic phase transition in a one-dimensional crystal lattice with long-range interactions. The model allows one to represent a broad range of dynamic regimes, from underdamped to overdamped. We systematically compare the discrete model with its various continuum counterparts including elastic, viscoelastic and viscosity-capillarity models. Each of these...

Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have been demonstrated as a potential platform for a wide-range of technologies, yet a method to interconnect functionally encoded NWs has remained a challenge. Here, we report a simple capillarity-driven and self-limited welding process that forms mechanically robust and Ohmic inter-NW connections. The process occurs at the point-of-contact between two NWs at temp...

VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor) is well known as an important molecule in angiogenesis. Its inhibition is pursued as an anticancer therapy; its enhancement as therapy for tissue ischaemia. In the present paper, its role in skeletal muscle is explored, both at rest and after exercise. Muscle VEGF mRNA and protein are increased severalfold after heavy exercise. Whereas global VEGF knock...

We study the two-dimensional dynamics of a droplet on an inclined, nonisothermal solid substrate. We use lubrication theory to obtain a single evolution equation for the interface, which accounts for gravity, capillarity, and thermo-capillarity, brought about by the dependence of the surface tension on temperature. The contact line motion is modeled using a relation that couples the contact lin...

The characterization of protein-folding kinetics with increasing chain length under various thermodynamic conditions is addressed using the capillarity picture in which distinct spatial regions of the protein are imagined to be folded or trapped and separated by interfaces. The quantitative capillarity theory is based on the nucleation theory of first-order transitions and the droplet analysis ...
