High pressure density behaviors for fluid mixtures made of carbon dioxide with solvent, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate, 2-propyl acetate, methanol, 1-propanol, or 2-propanol, at 313.15 K were satisfactorily correlated. The standard deviations were between 0.4 and 2.2 kg m -3 in density for each system in the composition range from 0.00 to 0.95 mole fraction of carbon dioxide.

INTRODUCTION New technology using partial carbon dioxide rebreathing has been developed to measure cardiac output. Because rebreathing increases respiratory effort, we investigated whether a newly developed system with 35 s rebreathing causes a lesser increase in respiratory effort under partial ventilatory support than does the conventional system with 50 s rebreathing. We also investigated wh...

We develop a numerical simulation of the global biogeochemical cycles of carbon that works over time scales extending from years to millions of years. The ocean is represented by warm and cold shallow water reservoirs, a thermocline reservoir, and deep Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific reservoirs. The atmosphere is characterized by a single carbon reservoir and the global biota by a single biomas...

In the decarboxylation of pyruvic acid by yeast, the question ofan initial formation ofcarbonic acid or of carbon dioxide may be investigated by the use of carbonic anhydrase. The use of this enzyme in such investigations was first suggested by Roughton and co-workers (Meldrum & Roughton, 1933; Ferguson & Roughton, 1934; Roughton, 1935). Roughton (1935) published a diagram (Krebs & Roughton, 19...

A combined treatment of high-pressure carbon dioxide (HPCD) and high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) was investigated as a non-thermal processing technique to enhance the safety and shelf life of carrot juice. Aerobes were completely inactivated by a combined treatment of 4.90 MPa-HPCD and 300 MPa-HHP. A combined treatment of 4.90 MPa-HPCD and 600 MPa-HHP effectively inactivated enzymes. The residua...

The axial dispersion coefficient of hexachlorobenzene in supercritical carbon dioxide is investigated in a fixed-bed packed with glass beads. The on-line chromatographic pulse-response experiment is used in order to study the dynamics of a packed column under supercritical conditions. The radial dispersion is assumed negligible because of the packed column geometry. To estimate the axial disper...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Laparoscopic surgery offers the advantages of minimally invasive surgery; however, pneumoperitoneum and the patient's position induce pathophysiological changes that may complicate anesthetic management. We studied the effect of clonidine and nitroglycerin on heart rate and blood pressure, if any, in association with these drugs or the procedure, as well as the effect ...

water by the latter alone, although it is known to manufacturers that sweet drinks require much less carbon dioxide than soda-water. The chief complaint about their soda-water was that it did not hold as much carbon dioxide in solution as some of the best soda-waters placed on the market by other manufacturers. The company employs the latest method of manufacture. Carbon dioxide is generated by...

The duration of respiratory depression induced by morphine 10 mg/70 kg was studied following the administration of one of two opioid antagonists. Respiratory measurements included: (i) the ventilatory response to carbon dioxide, described in two ways--the minute ventilation at an end-tidal carbon dioxide partial pressure of 8 kPa (VE8) and the log slope of the ventilatory response to carbon dio...

Among the current interests in organic synthesis are those reactions performing multiple C-C bond formation, in special when they undergo under catalytic conditions. Due to its properties, there is a growing interest on the use of compressed fluids (CF) as solvent media in catalytic processes. In this context, we present herein studies that aim to the development of a cleaner technology for the...
