Cardiovascular disorders are a common cause of falls and syncope in older adults. The most common cardiac disorders linked to falls and syncope are carotid sinus syndrome, postprandial hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, vasovagal syncope, and bradyarrhythmias. It is important to recognize these conditions, because they may be associated with an increased mortality. Most are easily treatable.

BACKGROUND syncope is a common cause of hospitalisation in the elderly. However, morbidity and mortality in elderly patients with syncope is not well established. METHODS two-hundred and forty-two patients older than 65 years consecutively referred to the participating centres for evaluation of transient loss of consciousness were enrolled in a multicentre 2-year longitudinal observational st...

Glossopharyneal neuralgia (GPN) is generally considered to be a pain disease. However, it can be also be a life-threatening cardiac cause of syncope. Neuralgia in the throat and neck can trigger severe bradycardia up to the point of asystole, which can progress to cardiac syncope with or without seizures. A 65 year-old male patient diagnosed with glossopharyngeal neuralgia complained of severe ...

Syncope is a common condition. It is frequently due to a benign cause, but may occasionally be due to a potentially life-threatening disorder. The presence of structural heart disease in patients with syncope is associated with a poor prognosis and may be a predictor of sudden cardiac death. In patients who present with syncope, the presence of structural heart disease and primary electrophysio...

Introduction. Evaluation of Guidelines in Syncope Study (EGSYS) is designed to differentiate between cardiac and noncardiac causes of syncope. The present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of this predictive model. Methods. In this prospective cross-sectional study, screening performance characteristics of EGSYS-U (univariate) and EGSYS-M (multivariate) in prediction of cardiac syncope were ...

Abstract Background: Implantable cardiac defibrillators (ICDs) therapy for primary prevention (PP) of sudden arrest (SCA) is well-established but underutilized globally. The Improve SCA study has identified a cohort patients called 1.5 (1.5PP), based on PP with the presence documented risk factors: non-sustained ventricular tachycardia, frequent premature contractions, left ejection fraction < ...

Symptoms of orthostatic intolerance including syncope, dizziness and unexplained falls affect millions people worldwide, and may result in long-term disability. Syncope affects 35-45% of population [1-3], accounts for 1-3% of emergency visits and up to 6% of all hospitalizations [4]. The majority of syncope cases remain unexplained (37-50%) [5,6] although the known causes of syncope include ref...
