We show how to give a coherent semantics to programs that are well-specified in a version of separation logic for a language with higher types: idealized algol extended with heaps (but with immutable stack variables). In particular, we provide simple sound rules for deriving higher-order frame rules, allowing for local reasoning.

We present the first probabilistic model to capture all levels of the Minsky Frame structure, with the goal of corpusbased induction of scenario definitions. Our model unifies prior efforts in discourse-level modeling with that of Fillmore’s related notion of frame, as captured in sentence-level, FrameNet semantic parses; as part of this, we resurrect the coupling among Minsky’s frames, Schank’...

Hand-made illustrations in scientific and technical textbooks commonly use internal and external labels or legends to establish co-referential relation between pictorial elements and textual expressions. By analyzing the most complex examples, we extracted several label layout styles and classified them. We propose a variety of real-time label layout algorithms that aim to produce nice and clea...

Two of the most important threads of work in knowledge representation today are frame-based representation systems (FRS’s) and Bayesian networks (BNs). FRS’s provide an excellent representation for the organizational structure of large complex domains, but their applicability is limited because of their inability to deal with uncertainty and noise. BNs provide an intuitive and coherent probabil...

In this article the frame-theoretic account of what is archimedean for order-algebraists, and semisimple for people who study commutative rings, deepens with the introduction of J -frames: compact normal frames that are join-generated by their saturated elements. Yosida frames are examples of these. In the category of J -frames with suitable skeletal morphisms, the strongly projectable frames a...

The problem of resonant generation of nonground-state condensates is addressed aiming at resolving the seeming paradox that arises when one resorts to the adiabatic representation. In this picture, the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of a timedependent Gross-Pitaevskii Hamiltonian are also functions of time. Since the level energies vary in time, no definite transition frequency can be introduce...

The “problem of time” has been a pressing issue in quantum gravity for some time. To help understand this problem, Rovelli proposed a model of a two harmonic oscillators system where one of the oscillators can be thought of as a “clock” for the other oscillator thus giving a natural time reference frame for the system. Recently, the author has constructed an explicit form for the coherent state...

In this paper, by using the nonlinear coherent states on a sphere, we introduce superposition of the aforementioned coherent states. Then, we consider quantum optical properties of these new superposed states and compare these properties with the corresponding properties of the nonlinear coherent states on the sphere. Specifically, we investigate their characteristics function, photon-number d...

We present an algorithm for extracting high quality temporally coherent alpha mattes of objects from a video. Our approach extends the conventional image matting approach, i.e. closed-form matting, to video by using multi-frame nonlocal matting Laplacian. Our multi-frame nonlocal matting Laplacian is defined over a nonlocal neighborhood in spatial temporal domain, and it solves the alpha mattes...

The current theories on episodic memory suggest a crucial role of spatial processing for an effective retrieval. For a successful episodic recall, the long-term allocentric scene has to be translated into an egocentric scene. Here, we argue that a crucial role for an episodic retrieval is played by a "mental frame syncing" between two kinds of allocentric representations. This neurocognitive pr...
