We use high resolution 3D SPH simulations to study the evolution of selfgravitating binary protoplanetary disks. Heating by shocks and cooling are included. We consider different orbital separations and masses of the disks and central stars. Isolated massive disks (M ∼ 0.1M⊙) fragment into protoplanets as a result of gravitational instability for cooling times comparable to the orbital time. Fr...

The properties of collisionless shocks, like the density jump, are usually derived from magnetohydrodynamics (MHD), where isotropic pressures assumed. Yet, in a plasma, an external magnetic field can sustain stable anisotropy. In \cite{BretJPP2018}, we devised model for kinetic history plasma through shock front, allowing to self-consistently compute downstream anisotropy, hence terms upstream ...

We present results from a 42 ks Chandra/ACIS-S observation of the transitional FR I/FR II radio galaxy 3C 288 at z = 0.246. We detect ∼3 keV gas extending to a radius of ∼0.5 Mpc with a 0.5–2.0 keV luminosity of 6.6 × 1043 erg s−1, implying that 3C 288 lies at the center of a poor cluster. We find multiple surface brightness discontinuities in the gas indicative of either a shock driven by the ...

We investigate a new implementation of the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics technique (SPH) designed to improve the realism with which galaxy formation can be simulated. In situations where cooling leads to the coexistence of phases of very different density and temperature, our method substantially reduces artificial overcooling near phase boundaries, prevents the exclusion of hot gas from the ...

To determine whether stress-evoked release of endogenous opioids might account for hypoalgesia in major depressive disorder (MDD), the mu-opioid antagonist naltrexone (50mg) or placebo was administered double-blind to 24 participants with MDD and to 31 non-depressed controls. Eighty minutes later participants completed a painful foot cold pressor test and, after a 5-min interval, began a 25-min...

BACKGROUND Heat and cold shock response are normally considered as independent phenomena. A small amount of evidence suggests instead that interactions may exist between them in two Lactococcus strains. RESULTS We show the occurrence of molecular relationships between the mechanisms of cold and heat adaptations in Streptococcus thermophilus, a lactic acid bacterium widely used in dairy fermen...

Using high resolution, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, we investigate the evolution of a self-gravitating multi-phase interstellar medium in the central kiloparsec region of a galactic disk. We find that a gravitationally and thermally unstable disk evolves, in a self-stabilizing manner, into a globally quasi-stable disk that consists of cold (T < 100 K), dense clumps and filaments ...

I investigate the process of converting gas into stars within the framework of a standard cosmological model. By examining the set of objects grown in a combined N-body plus smoothed particle hydrodynamics simulation with those obtained in similar models where some of the cold, dense gas was replaced by collisionless “star” particles I show that it is possible to make this substitution without ...

The psychrotrophic bacterium Pseudomonas fragi was subjected to cold shocks from 30 or 20 to 5 degrees C. The downshifts were followed by a lag phase before growth resumed at a characteristic 5 degrees C growth rate. The analysis of protein patterns by two-dimentional gel electrophoresis revealed overexpression of 25 or 17 proteins and underexpression of 12 proteins following the 30- or 20-to-5...
