Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), a feline lentivirus related to HIV, causes immune dysfunction in domestic andwild cats. The Pallas’ cat is the only species fromAsia known to harbor a species-specific strain of FIV designated FIVOma in natural populations. Here, a 25% seroprevalence of FIV is reported from 28wildMongolian Pallas’ cats sampled from 2000 to 2008. Phylogenetic analysis of prov...

Zinc (Zn) deficiency reduces crop yields globally. This study investigated the importance of root morphological traits, especially root hairs, in plant growth and Zn uptake. Wild-type barley (Hordeum vulgare) Pallas and its root-hairless mutant brb were grown in soil and solution culture at different levels of Zn supply for 16 d. Root morphological traits (root length, diameter, and surface are...

The deposition of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins, dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was studied during the period 2006–2008 in northern Finland (Pallas), 1998–2008 in southern Finland (Evo) and 2002–2004 in the Gulf of Finland archipelago (Utö). Retrospective snow samples were taken from the whole snowbank in Evo in 2003 and 2004, and recently fallen snow was coll...

Introduction: As Dawn’s ion engine propels the spacecraft toward the asteroid belt, there is growing interest in the asteroids as planetary predecessors. Pallas is the third largest asteroid, similar in size to Vesta, and has an orbit similar to that of Ceres. Pallas is one of the three objects in the main belt that may be a proto-planet rather than a fragment or remnant of the early solar system.

The masses of the three largest asteroids: (1) Ceres, (2) Pallas and (4) Vesta were determined from gravitational perturbations exerted on respectively 25, 2, and 26 selected asteroids. These masses were calculated by means of the leastsquares method as weighted means of the values obtained separately from the perturbations on single asteroids. Special attention was paid to the selection of the...

In the present study, some ecological factors were studied for Amphipoda at different depths. The Shannon, Margalef, and Hill indices were used to determine the  species diversity, richness and evenness, respectively. In addition, the association and niche overlap values were estimated. Indices of species richness and diversity were highest at 50 and 100m depths, respectively.  The or...

The species Antipathes dichotoma was established by Pallas in 1766 on the basis of a description given by Marsigli (1725) of a specimen collected in the Mediterranean off the coast of Marseille. Marsigli's specimen (Lithophyte no. 9) was described and illustrated as a loosely dichotomously branched colony with strong spines and a biserial arrangement of polyps, with each polyp appearing to have...

Introduction: Spatially resolved images provide the ability to examine both the surface and the shape of planetary objects. Observing from Earth provides limited spatial or shape information for most asteroids due to their small extent. However, remote sensing has advanced by leaps and bounds our understanding of the largest asteroids [e.g. 1,2]. We observed 2 Pallas with Hubble Space Telescope...

Two methods are considered for the improvement of the ephemerides of the asteroids observed by the Hipparcos satellite. They utilize different combinations of ground-based and space-based data. In particular, we develop a method based on an analysis of the variance matrix in the least-squares solution of Hipparcos observations taken alone. Application and comparison of the results for (2) Palla...
