Optical fiber-based sensors "embedded" in functionalized carbon structures (FCSs) and textile net structures (TNSs) based on alkaline-resistant glass are introduced for the purpose of structural health monitoring (SHM) of concrete-based structures. The design aims to monitor common SHM parameters such as strain and cracks while at the same time acting as a structural strengthening mechanism. Th...
In this paper, a standard test method of evaluating the measurement performance of distributed sensors such as Brillouin scattering based fiber optic sensors (FOSs) and other long gauge sensors for monitoring cracks is proposed. The performance evaluation of two types of Brillouin scattering based DFOSs named as BOTDR(Brillouin Optical Time Domain Reflectometry) and PPP-BOTDA (Pulse Pre-Pump Br...
the cracked brazilian disc (cbd) specimen is widely used in order to determine mode-i/ii and mixed-mode fracture toughness of a rock medium. in this study, the stress intensity factor (sif) on the crack-tip in this specimen is calculated for various geometrical crack conditions using the extended-finite element method (x-fem). this method is based upon the finite element method (fem). in this m...

Through-thickness residual-stress profiles in rolled 7050-T74 aluminum plate were measured before and after stress relief by stretching (-Tx51). Measurement required adapting the crack compliance method to measure both inplane stress components. Unexpected features in the profiles could be explained by through-thickness yield strength variations caused by crystallographic texture.
The prediction of the service life of concrete materials is difficult, mainly because of their complex heterogeneous microstructure and their random nature. Studying the presence of cracks in concrete and their effect on chloride transport and binding properties is of great interest in civil engineering. Cracks with different widths and depths will reduce the effective cover thickness and accel...
