It has been suggested that discontinuous gas exchange cycles (DGCs) in insects evolved in response to hypoxic and/or hypercapnic environments, and that the flutter phase of the DGC is predominantly diffusive. We tested these hypotheses by examining the rate of CO(2) release at a declining series of oxygen partial pressures in adults of Aphodius fossor, an inhabitant of moist to wet dung pats th...

The effects of 3-deoxygibberellin C (DGC) on the growth-promoting actions of gibberellins A(1), A(2), A(3), A(4), A(5), A(7), A(8), A(9), A(13), A(18), A(19), A(20), and A(23) (GAn) as well as 13-deoxygibberellin A(5) (deoxy-GA(5)) were tested with seedlings of gibberellin-deficient dwarf mutants (d(2) and d(5)) of maize (Zea mays L.). It was found that DGC promoted the actions of gibberellins ...

With the availability of genetic pathways or networks and accumulating knowledge on genes with variants predisposing to diseases (disease genes), we propose a disease-gene-centric support vector machine (DGC-SVM) that directly incorporates these two sources of prior information into building microarray-based classifiers for binary classification problems. DGC-SVM aims to detect the genes cluste...

BACKGROUND High purity of tumour samples is a necessity for accurate genetic and expression analysis and is usually achieved by positive selection in chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL). RESULTS We adapted a bifunctional rosette-based antibody cocktail for negative selection of B-cells for isolating CLL cells from peripheral blood (PB). PB samples from CLL patients were split into aliquots. O...

One of the major physiological roles of potassium channels in glial cells is to promote "potassium spatial buffering" in the central nervous system, a process necessary to maintain an optimal potassium concentration in the extracellular environment. This process requires the precise distribution of potassium channels accumulated at high density in discrete subdomains of glial cell membranes. To...

Dentate granule cell (DGC) neurogenesis persists throughout life in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. In rodent temporal lobe epilepsy models, status epilepticus (SE) stimulates neurogenesis, but many newborn DGCs integrate aberrantly and are hyperexcitable, whereas others may integrate normally and restore inhibition. The overall influence of altered neurogenesis on epileptogenesis is therefore u...

of “Rational Homotopy Calculus of Functors” by Ben C. Walter, Ph.D., Brown University, July 2005. We construct a homotopy calculus of functors in the sense of Goodwillie for the categories of rational homotopy theory. More precisely, given a homotopy functor between any of the categories of differential graded vector spaces (DG), reduced differential graded vector spaces, differential graded Li...

Labeled displaced ganglion cells (DGC's) were observed in chick embryos (day 12 to 18) and hatchings following discrete tectal injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Average DGC diameter was 10 to 15 mu, approximately twice the size of orthotopic ganglion cells. Six to 12 DGC's were found per 15 mu section. These findings conclusively demonstrate a tectal projection for the DGC.

Background: Sperm that bypasses natural apoptosis may find their way into semen. In order to avoid the insemination of such sperm during an intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment, novel sperm selection procedures such as the Zeta procedure have been implemented. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate whether this procedure, in addition to reducing the number of immature or ...

this is the first report implementing combined density gradient centrifugation/zeta (dgc/zeta) sperm selection procedure for a couple with eleven previous intra cytoplasmic sperm injection/ in vitro fertilization (icsi/ivf) failure cycles. semen analysis was carried out according to world health organization criteria. protamine deficiency, dna fragmentation and morphology were assessed by chrom...
