Background & Objective: FLT3-ITD mutation detection has been an integral part of diagnostic work ups focused on acute myeloid leukemia. However, some studies have indicated that the mutation is unstable during the various stages of the disease. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of this marker in paired diagnosis-relapse samples using Delta-PCR method. Materials & Methods:...
Introduction The reliability of a diagnostic test is determined by its specificity and sensitivity. The sensitivity of a diagnostic test is defined as the ratio between the number of true positives and the sum of true positives and false negatives. The specificity of a test is defined as the ratio between true negative results and the sum of the number of true negative results and false positiv...
In 1975, Fagan published a nomogram to help practitioners determine, without the use of a calculator or computer, the probability of a patient truly having a condition of interest given a particular test result. Nomograms are very useful for bedside interpretations of test results, as no test is perfect. However, the practicality of Fagan's nomogram is limited by its use of the likelihood ratio...
Background :Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay has widely used for the detection of tuberculosis (TB). This study tried to compare in-house PCR with some well-known commercial PCR kits for detection of TB agent. Methods : Clinical samples obtained from 620 TB suspected patients were analyzed for the diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTC) by in-house PCR. All samples were o...
Background & Aims: Given that H. pylori infection increases the inflammation of the stomach and duodenum, stomach and duodenal ulcer and gastric adenocarcinoma risk in children, the main purpose in this study was to compare the accuracy of serology and rapid urease test in diagnostic of H. Pylori in children. Materials & Methods: This cross-sectional study was a diagnostic test evaluation th...
Two recently produced monoclonal antibodies were used to develop an antigen capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for rapid diagnosis of Penicillium marneffei. The method was evaluated with 53 patients with culture-confirmed penicilliosis and 240 controls. The diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the ELISA were 92.45, 97.5, and 96.59%, respectively.
The power analysis of a diagnostic test is often based on the sensitivity and specificity of the test. In such a test, the outcome of the diagnostic screening test is compared to the gold standard. In the common case-control study, the gold standard must be known before. In a prospective study, the gold standard is determined subsequent to the study, so the case-control framework is not appropr...
