A lectotype is designated for the name Dianthus virgineus. The relationships between D. virgineus, caryophyllus var. caryophyllus, and inodorus are analyzed. virgineus oldest available that applies to a species complex often referred as sylvestris or broad circumscription of cultivated ornamental caryophyllus. taxonomic consequences discussed, need further studies highlighted.

We report the development of 60 microsatellite markers on four species of the fungal complex Microbotryum, causing anther smut of the Caryophyllaceae. Microsatellites were found in four expressed sequence tag (EST) libraries, built from isolates of M. lychnis-dioicae, M. violaceum sensus stricto, M. lagerheimii and M. dianthorum, collected, respectively, from the plants Silene latifolia, S. nut...

Seven populations of Heterodera trifolii from Arkansas, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Australia plus 3 or 4 single-cyst isolates (SCI) from each population were tested for reproduction on seven species of plants to compare the host preferences among and within populations. Common lespedeza, Kummerowia striata cv. Kobe, was a good host for all populations and isolates. Therefore, a plant was consi...

The balance between reactions involving free radicals and processes which ameliorate their effect plays an important role in the regulation of plant senescence. In this study a method was developed to isolate peroxisomes and mitochondria from carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv Ember) petals. Based on electron microscopy and marker enzyme levels, the proportion of peroxisomes to mitochondria...

The lipid microviscosity of microsomal membranes from senescing cut carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L. cv. White Sim) flowers rises with advancing senescence. The increase in membrane microviscosity is initiated within 3 to 4 days of cutting the flowers and coincides temporally with petal-inrolling denoting the climacteric-like rise in ethylene production. Treatment of young cut flowers with a...

Exposure of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) flowers to ethylene evokes the developmental program of petal senescence. The temporal relationship of several aspects of this developmental program following treatment with ethylene was investigated. Exposure of mature, presenescent flowers to 7.5 microliters per liter ethylene for at least 6 hours induced petal in-rolling and premature senescen...

Doubled haploids of carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) were obtained by pseudofertilized ovule culture. Emasculated ̄ower buds of carnation were pollinated with pollen inactivated by Xray irradiation. After 2±3 weeks, the ovaries were explanted and were cultured on solid MS medium containing 2 mM NAA, 2 mM BAP and 6% sucrose. Regenerated plants(R0) were morphologically different from the moth...
