Enterococci are a major cause of health care-associated infections and account for approximately 10% of all bacteremias globally. The aim of this study was to determine the proportion of enterococcal bacteremia isolates in Australia that are antimicrobial resistant, with particular emphasis on susceptibility to ampicillin and the glycopeptides, and to characterize the molecular epidemiology of ...

The purpose of this study was to characterize the antibiotic resistance profiles of Enterococcus species isolated from fresh produce harvested in the southwestern United States. Among the 185 Enterococcus isolates obtained, 97 (52%) were Enterococcus faecium, 38 (21%) were Enterococcus faecalis, and 50 (27%) were other Enterococcus species. Of human clinical importance, E. faecium strains had a...

This study investigated the inhibitory effect of probiotic Enterococcus faecium WB2000 on biofilm formation by cariogenic streptococci. The ability of E. faecium WB2000 and JCM5804 and Enterococcus faecalis JCM5803 to inhibit biofilm formation by seven laboratory oral streptococcal strains and 13 clinical mutans streptococcal strains was assayed. The Enterococcal strains inhibited biofilm forma...

Emerging drug resistance of the enterococci necessitates differentiation from group D streptococci and accurate species identification. MicroScan (Baxter Healthcare Corp., West Sacramento, Calif.) has recently developed a microdilution system for identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing of gram-positive cocci. To evaluate the ability of this system to identify Enterococcus species, ...

Fifty-six Enterococcus spp. strains were isolated from foods in Southern Brazil, confirmed by PCR and classified as Enterococcus faecalis (27), Enterococcus faecium (23) and Enterococcus spp (6). Antimicrobial susceptibility tests showed resistance phenotypes to a range of antibiotics widely administrated in humans such as gentamycin, streptomycin, ampicillin and vancomycin.

Bile-resistant bacteria, particularly gram-positive Enterococcus faecalis and Enterococcus faecium, play an important role in biliary stent occlusion, because their sessile mode of growth protects them against host defenses and antimicrobial agents. Twelve E. faecalis and seven E. faecium strains isolated from occluded biliary stents have been investigated for slime production, presence of aggr...

background: enterococci are members of the normal gut flora and released into the environment via sewage outlets, where they can survive for long times. infections with high-level gentamicin resistant (hlgr) enterococci are emerging worldwide. hlgr enterococci have developed a resistance to most antibiotics commonly used for enterococcal infections therefore; treatment of infections caused b...

Enterococci are members of the lactic acid bacteria family and are responsible for many food spoilage and fermentations. Some strains of this microorganism are used as probiotics in humans and animals to improve host immunity. However, some Enterococci are important pathogens which cause severe infections. Some strains of Enterococci are resistant to common antibiotic...

a collection of enterococci  spp. (about 96 isolates) were isolated from two iranian raw milk cheeses, namely lighvan and koozeh, and subsequently, identified as enterococcus faecium , enterococcus faecalis , enterococcus durans , enterococcus casseliflavus and enterococcus italicus by 16s rdna sequencing. all of the 96 isolates were subjected to agar-spot and well-diffusion assay in order to d...

Aim: To isolate and identify in a Chilean population, Enterococcus spp. from root canals with persistent chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) and to investigate the potential correlation between the bacteria and the observed clinical features. Methods: Twenty patients with indication for endodontic retreatment due to persistent CAP were selected. Data from patient general health and dental clinic...
