We reported the case of a 74-year-old woman suffering from essential tremor for 20 years which was treated effectively with purified bovine brain gangliosides containing GM1, GD1a, GD1b and GT1b gangliosides. The trials of the treatment were conducted twice, 40 mg and 20 mg gangliosides per day respectively administered intramuscularly. Essential tremor dramatically improved with gangliosides o...

Practolol, propranolol, and placebo have been tested on an objective test of lithium induced tremor. Both beta-blocking agents produced significantly more tremor than the placebo. It is argued that lithium induced tremor is closer to essential than to physiological tremor.

The relationship between plasma propranolol concentration and relief of essential tremor was examined in 11 patients during treatment with oral racemic propranolol in doses of 30 to 640 mg/day. Although propranolol decreased tremor in all 11 patients, the degree of improvement varied widely in individuals (mean 51%, range 25--90%), and was not related directly occurred at plasma propranolol con...

Estimating the functional topology of a network from multivariate observations is an important task in nonlinear dynamics. We introduce the nonparametric partial directed coherence that allows disentanglement of direct and indirect connections and their directions. We illustrate the performance of the nonparametric partial directed coherence by means of a simulation with data from synchronized ...

The neuronal physiological correlates of clinical heterogeneity in human essential tremor are unknown. We now test the hypothesis that thalamic neuronal and EMG activities during intention essential tremor are similar to those of the intention tremor which is characteristic of cerebellar lesions. Thalamic neuronal firing was studied in a cerebellar relay nucleus (ventral intermediate, Vim) and ...

Adrenergic beta-receptor sensitivity of six male patients with essential tremor and six age-matched normal controls was assessed by measuring the response in the heart rate and postural tremor to incremental injections of the adrenergic beta-agonist isoprenaline. The relative increase in heart rate and tremor in essential tremor patients did not differ from that in normal controls. It is conclu...

BACKGROUND Clinical characteristics reminiscent of cerebellar tremor occur in patients with advanced essential tremor. Ballistic movements are known to be abnormal in cerebellar disease. The hypothesis was proposed that ballistic movements are abnormal in essential tremor, reflecting cerebellar dysfunction. OBJECTIVE To elucidate the role of the cerebellum in the pathophysiology of essential ...

A strong association between dystonia and tremor has been known for more than a century. Two forms of tremor in dystonia are currently recognized: 1) dystonic tremor, which is tremor produced by dystonic muscle contraction and 2) tremor associated with dystonia, which is tremor in a body part that is not dystonic, but there is dystonia elsewhere. Both forms of tremor in dystonia frequently rese...

BACKGROUND Our aims were to: (1) estimate the prevalence of essential tremor (ET) in a community-based study in northern Manhattan, New York, N.Y., USA; (2) compare prevalence across ethnic groups, and (3) provide prevalence estimates for the oldest old. METHODS This study did not rely on a screening questionnaire. Rather, as part of an in-person neurological evaluation, each participant prod...

The relationship between essential tremor (ET) and migraine was investigated in a prospective study. In a group of 74 ET patients 36.5% had migraine compared with 17.7% of 102 control subjects without tremor. In a group of 58 patients with migraine 17.2% had ET compared with 1.2% of 85 controls without migraine. The prevalence of ET in migraine controls was greater than controls without migrain...
