OBJECTIVE To evaluate the potential utility of a new endoscopically placed expandable tracheal stent in the treatment of benign symptomatic stenoses of the cervical trachea. STUDY DESIGN Pilot study utilizing a prospectively followed case series. METHODS An initial group of six patients undergoing stent placement was examined with rigid and flexible endoscopy under anesthesia immediately fo...

We report the case of a supraclinoid carotid rupture during the delivery of a balloon-expandable stent in a 59-year-old patient with incidental paraclinoid berry aneurysms for whom stent-assisted coiling was planned. The deployment of the stent resulted in immediate rupture of the artery. We describe the emergent management of this complication with prolonged balloon inflation to occlude the si...

A 56-year-old male with metastatic unresectable cholangiocarcinoma presented to our clinic with worsening nausea and vomiting. Prior to presentation, the patient underwent placement of a palliative metal biliary stent and an uncovered self-expandable metal stents (UCSEMS) through the pylorus and duodenum for gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) from tumor burden. However, the patient subsequently d...

A patient sustained internal carotid artery (ICA) injury during trans-sphenoidal surgery. Bleeding from the resultant pseudo-aneurysm was not fully controlled by surgical packing. Emergency endovascular deployment over the injured ICA segment of a self-expandable covered-stent ('Symbiot' stent), initially designed for use in coronary saphenous vein-graft, was successful in securing haemostasis.

BACKGROUND Balloon angioplasty for treatment of coarctation of the aorta in adults, though promising, is sometimes limited by significant residual gradient (> 20 mmHg). Few studies have been reported on use of balloon-expandable stents in such a situation. We evaluated the use of self-expandable stents in patients with coarctation of the aorta. METHODS Eight hypertensive patients (age 15 to 2...

A 10 month old boy with stridor persisting from birth was found to have tracheal narrowing secondary to myofibromatosis of the tracheal wall. An expandable metal stent was positioned across the tracheal stenosis with immediate clinical improvement. There were no complications relating to stent insertion. The child remained clinically asymptomatic and repeat bronchoscopy at nine months' follow u...

Recently, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)guided biliary drainage has been introduced as an alternative method after failed endoscopic biliary drainage, particularly in patients with a pre-existing duodenal obstruction [1–3]. A longer self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) is usually used for EUS-guided hepaticogastrostomy (EUS-HGS) to prevent stent migration. However, re-intervention after EUS-HGS is c...

Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) of the left main coronary artery (LMCA) for revascularization after stenosis is still considered controversial therapy. Previous studies were performed with balloon-expandable drug-eluting stents (DES). Balloon-expandable stents presented a challenge because they were not able to adapt effectively to variation in the vessel lumen. There are limited data ...

PURPOSE To retrospectively evaluate peripheral arterial lesions treated with stent-grafts in various territories and to identify the role of computed tomography angiography (CTA), both in diagnosis and follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 19 patients (11 male, 8 female) aged between 24 and 85 years. In all, 24 stent-grafts were used to seal an extravasation in 3 patients, a pse...

Objective: Bronchial stenosis, malacia and dehiscence are major airway complications of lung transplantation. Our success in managing this problem evolved from the use of semi-rigid dilators, to balloon dilation and placement of a stent, which were initially silicone, thereafter wire balloon-expandable and ®nally wire self-expandable. Methods: From May, 1994 until July 1997, we performed a tota...
