Dynamically reconfigurable systems have benefited from a new class of FPGAs, recently introduced into the market, that enables partial and dynamic reconfiguration. While enabling concurrent reconfiguration without disturbing system operation, this technology also raises a new test challenge: to assure a continuously fault free operation independently of the circuit present after the reconfigura...

CASE tools are notorious for forcing organizations to adapt to a standard development methodology. The underlying assumption is that a universally applicable development method exists and it is up to the organization to conform to that method. But software development is no longer a homogeneous field. As computers are applied to an increasingly diverse set of applications, it is becoming increa...

 Cyanidation is a relatively simple and cheap technology to treat gold-containing ores. However, this process is not completely effective in refractory gold-bearing sulfide ores. In the case of very low-grade ores, biooxidation is an attractive alternative pre-treatment to render the gold amenable to extraction. This process utilizes the ability of acidophilic bacteria to oxidize the sulfide m...

Partonic interpretation of high-energy reactions is known to depend on a reference frame. Particularly, in the rest frame of the target Drell-Yan process looks like a freeing of the projectile ll̄ fluctuation, rather than qq̄ → ll̄ annihilation. The lightcone representation for Drell-Yan reaction is very similar to that in DIS and exposes a substantial contamination of soft interactions which turn...

Adam Smith made two positive claims about slavery in the context of developing economies. First, Smith explains that slavery is in general highly inefficient. By his account, the net product under freedom is 12 times larger than under slavery. Second, he observes that, despite its inefficiencies, slavery persists in most of the world. Taken together, these claims create a fundamental puzzle: Wh...

A new commercial system for rapid extraction of DNA, consisting of a card on which a drop of bacterial suspension is spotted, was evaluated with 43 mycobacterial strains. Once dried, a small disk of the seeded area was directly transferred in the amplification mixture. All the samples produced good quality amplification products which were satisfactorily sequenced.

One of the longstanding questions in international economics is how to get a country with an economy mired in import protection to one characterized by free trade. Reciprocity and unilateralism are the two most popular answers that economists propose. Unilateralism, or “going alone” with trade liberalization, is the standard policy prescription for a small country that, by definition, cannot af...

The effects of monocular deprivation (MD) on the ocular dominance of visual cortical neurons are a paradigmatic example of experience-dependent plasticity. Here we review recent data showing that extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in the control of experience-dependent plasticity both in the developing and adult visual cortex.
