Candida albicans is the most common fungal pathogen known to cause endovascular infections, such as vascular catheter sepsis, infections of vascular prostheses and infective endocarditis. A C. albicans isolate was used to determine the apoptotic potential of the fungus in a rat endocarditis model. This study confirms the ability of C. albicans to induce apoptosis in myocardial tissue.
The early events of severe sepsis set in motion a cascade of events that significantly contributes to the morbidity and mortality observed during the first few days of this syndrome. Although sepsis is a deadly, acute disease, survivors also suffer long-term consequences. Clinical data underscore subsequent high mortality rates associated with patients who are long-term survivors of the acute s...
In this study, we aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics of Candida parapsilosis sepsis in preterm infants. In this retrospective analysis of the clinical data of 11 cases of Candida parapsilosis sepsis and 13 cases of C. albicans sepsis, the two groups were compared for research using one-way analysis of variance (one-way ANOVA), chi2 test, and non-conditional logistic regression an...
[Controversies about the management of invasive fungal infections in very low birth weight infants].
OBJECTIVE This review encompasses the most recent publications about fungal infection in very low birth weight infants, keeping health professionals updated about this growing problem observed in neonatal units. SOURCES OF DATA Original and review articles published over the past 15 years were searched in MEDLINE and Lilacs, using the following keywords: preterm infant, very low birth weight ...
Sepsis, also known as septicemia, is one of the 10 leading causes of death worldwide. The rising tide of sepsis due to bacterial, fungal and viral infections cannot be stemmed by current antimicrobial therapies and supportive measures. New paradigms for the mechanism and resolution of sepsis and consequences for sepsis survivors are emerging. Consistent with Benjamin Franklin's dictum 'an ounce...
During a 3 year period, 1987-1989, we encountered three major complications associated with parenteral nutrition leading to congestive cardiac failure--acute beriberi, right atrial and superior vena caval thrombosis, and fungal endocarditis. Unrecognized, these are invariably fatal. Persistent vomiting from intestinal obstruction led to the development of thiamine deficiency in the patient with...
Early neonatal sepsis mainly has bacterial etiology – 84%, less often fungal 12%, otherwise viral and parasitic etiology. According to the European Center for Disease Control Prevention (CDC), occurrence of in newborns is closely related birth weight gestational age, as well skin color. It was established, particular, that most severe types occur children weighing 400–1500 g at than 30 weeks ge...

Tec family kinases are intracellular non-receptor tyrosine kinases implicated in numerous functions, including T cell and B cell regulation. However, a role in microbial pathogenesis has not been described. Here, we identified Tec kinase as a novel key mediator of the inflammatory immune response in macrophages invaded by the human fungal pathogen C. albicans. Tec is required for both activatio...
