The antimycotic activity of 16 o-nitrophenylhydrazones against strains of Hansenula anomala, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Candida parapsylosis, and Cryptococcus albidus was tested. All 16 compounds inhibited growth of the yeast strains. The inhibitory activity of the 4 methyl-derivatives substituted on the aromatic nucleus was particularly significant.

Fungicidal effects of histatin-5 against 26 oral isolates belonging to 5 non-albicans Candida species were examined. Fifty microM of histatin-5 killed more than 95% of Candida tropicalis and Candida guilliermondii isolates and more than 90% of Candida parapsilosis and Candida krusei. However, Candida glabrata was less sensitive to the peptide (mean 62.9%). Our results, taken together, demonstra...

The influence of hypoxia on the in vitro activities of amphotericin B, azoles, and echinocandins against Aspergillus spp. was evaluated by comparing MICs, minimal fungicidal concentrations (MFCs), and epidemiological cutoffs (ECOFFs). Changes of MIC distributions due to hypoxia largely depend on the method, the species, and the growth ability under hypoxia. The activities of antifungals were no...

The in vitro activity of Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) oil against dermatophytes (n = 106) and filamentous fungi (n = 78) was determined. Tea tree oil MICs for all fungi ranged from 0.004% to 0.25% and minimum fungicidal concentrations (MFCs) ranged from <0.03% to 8.0%. Time-kill experiments with 1-4 x MFC demonstrated that three of the four test organisms were still detected after 8 h of t...

Antifungal activity of celery essential oil against Malassezia furfur was investigated using broth microdilution and vapor contact methods. Potent antifungal activity was evident using both methods. Fungicidal activity was revealed in the vapor contact method.

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the activity of benzydamine, lidocaine, and bupivacaine, three drugs with local anesthetic activity, against Candida albicans and non-albicans strains and to clarify their mechanism of activity. METHODS The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined for 20 Candida strains (18 clinical isolates and two American Type Culture Collection strains). The fungistatic ...

The in vitro activity of terbinafine alone and in combination with other antifungal agents was tested against isolates of Aspergillus fumigatus, A. flavus and A. niger. Testing was performed in a modified National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) macrodilution broth assay, and interactions were examined using a checkerboard design. Terbinafine was highly active against Asperg...
