Diuretic-induced mild hypovolemia with hemoconcentration reportedly improves dynamic cerebral autoregulation, whereas central hypovolemia without hemoconcentration induced by lower body negative pressure (LBNP) has no effect or impairs dynamic cerebral autoregulation. This discrepancy may be explained by different blood properties, by degrees of central hypovolemia, or both. We investigated the...

Three cardiac surgical patients with acute postoperative renal failure were treated with a constant infusion of furosemide (Lasix) after furosemide given in bolus proved ineffective. Furosemide given continuously brought about a prompt resolution of the oliguria and tended to hasten the resolution of acute renal failure.

Generalized edema is one of the most important complications in patients with nephrotic syndrome. Diuretics like furosemide are the first choice for reducing the edema. Hypo-albuminemia reduces the effect of furosemide, and thus, this drug is co-administered with albumin to reinforce the therapeutic effect and for the correction of reduced oncotic pressure. The aim of this study was to compare ...

We determined the spatial distribution of pulmonary blood flow (PBF) with 15-micron fluorescent-labeled microspheres during rest and exercise in five Thoroughbred horses before and 4 h after furosemide administration (0.5 mg/kg iv). The primary finding of this study was that PBF redistribution occurred from rest to exercise, both with and without furosemide. However, there was less blood flow t...

This observational study compared patients suffering from congestive heart failure (CHF) who were treated with loop diuretics torasemide or furosemide. Data documenting the course of the disease and its associated costs over a period of one year were collected retrospectively. A total of 400 CHF patients, 200 in each treatment group, were included in the analysis. Concomitant ACE inhibitor ther...

The effects of intravertebral artery infusions of [Sar1, Ile8] and [Sar1, Thr8] angiotensin II on the central nervous system were studied in furosemide-treated dogs anesthetized with alpha-chloralose. Acute administration of furosemide led to a significant increase in plasma renin activity, plasma noradrenaline levels and heart rate, and also to a slight rise of blood pressure. In the furosemid...

Furosemide is a potent diuretic that affects water transfer across the respiratory epithelium, which is closely related to the transepithelial potential difference (PD). Water is a critical factor that determines mucus transport; an important lung defence mechanism that removes particles and microorganisms from the respiratory system. The aim of the present study was to investigate the acute ef...

To examine the influence of amikacin-induced acute renal damage on the urinary excretion of furosemide and the time-dependent variation in the urinary amount of the agent, amikacin (1.2 g/kg) was given intraperitoneally to Wistar rats. Study I: Three percent b.w. of 1% NaCl solution was given orally before and after amikacin treatment, and an 8-hour urine for N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NA...

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of furosemide on renal perfusion by using arterial spin labeling (ASL) magnetic resonance imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS Eleven healthy human subjects were enrolled in the study. The measurement of renal blood flow (RBF) was performed by applying an ASL technique with flow-sensitive alternating inversion ...

In this study erythrocyte phosphate release depended on the intracellular hydrolysis of organic phosphate esters. Total phosphate release was increased in essential hypertension, which suggests an elevated phosphate ester metabolism. Ouabain-sensitive phosphate release was decreased, and the ratio of intracellular Na+/K+ concentrations was increased, a finding consistent with a diminished Na-K-...
