The female lower genital tract is constantly exposed to microbial infection, some of which can ascend to and cause pathology such as hydrosalpinx in the upper genital tract, which can affect fertility. To understand host mechanisms for preventing upper genital tract pathology, we screened 11 inbred strains of mice for hydrosalpinx induction by C. muridarum. When examined on days 60 to 80 after ...
BACKGROUND Although Tim-3 & PD-L1 signaling pathways play important roles in negatively regulating immune responses, their roles in chlamydial infection have not been evaluated. METHODS Neutralization antibodies targeting Tim-3 and PD-L1 were used to treat mice. Following an intravaginal infection with C. muridarum organisms, mice with or without the dual antibody treatment were compared for ...
INTRODUCTION The purpose of this study was to explore the impact of body mass index (BMI) or pregnancy weight gain on the presence, site, and severity of genital tract trauma at childbirth in nulliparous women. METHODS The present study is a subanalysis of a prospective cohort of healthy nulliparous women recruited during pregnancy and followed through birth. Weight gain during pregnancy and ...
Chlamydia trachomatis is the major cause of tubal occlusion, and is also associated with IVF failure and spontaneous abortion. These infections are asymptomatic in most individuals and can persist in the genital tract for long periods of time in a form resistant to immune destruction. A significant percentage of couples seeking treatment for infertility might, therefore, harbour C. trachomatis ...
Genital tract tuberculosis is usually secondary to extragenital tuberculosis. The upper genital tract is usually involved; involvement of cervix and vulva is very uncommon. We present two such rare cases of vulval and cervical tuberculosis diagnosed on histopathology and treated with antitubercular chemotherapy.
•LCH of the female reproductive tract has four patterns of involvement.•A comprehensive literature review revealed 35 cases of pure genital LCH.•We report two new cases of pure LCH lesions of the vulva and one of the cervix.•Treatment of LCH varies and there is no standard for pure genital involvement.•Prognosis of LCH confined to the gynecologic tract appears to be favorable.
Mice lacking inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) or treated with iNOS inhibitors resolved chlamydial genital tract infections. Additionally, treatment of primary murine cell cultures with gamma interferon restricted chlamydial growth in the absence of nitric oxide. From these results, iNOS activity is unnecessary for the resolution of chlamydial genital tract infections in mice and inhibitio...

BACKGROUND Schistosoma (S.) haematobium is a neglected tropical disease which may affect any part of the genital tract in women. Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) may cause abnormal vaginal discharge, contact bleeding, genital tumours, ectopic pregnancies and increased susceptibility to HIV. Symptoms may mimic those typical of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and women with genital sch...
BACKGROUND There are two main strategies for the prevention of post-abortal upper genital tract infection: antibiotics given around the time of surgery for all women; and 'screen-and-treat', in which all women presenting for abortion are screened for genital infections and those with positive results are treated. OBJECTIVES To determine:1. the effectiveness of antibiotic prophylaxis in preven...
