The ground-state properties of the square-lattice spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet with spatially anisotropic couplings are investigated by Green’s-function projection approaches. The staggered magnetization and the two-spin correlators are calculated; the competition between magnetic longand short-range order is discussed in comparison with experiments on Sr2[Ca2]CuO3.

Phase transitions in a quasi-one-dimensional surface system on a metal substrate are investigated as a function of temperature. Upon cooling the system shows a loss of long-range order, fluctuations, and a transition into an inhomogeneous ground state due to competition of local adsorbate-adsorbate interactions with an incommensurate charge density wave. This agrees with a general phase diagram...

Trial wave functions including angular momentum projection and deformation with central Jastrow and linear-type correlations are calculated to study the ground state rotational band of the Ne, Mg, Si, S, and Ar nuclei and the ground state of Ca. A systematic analysis of the competition among different correlation mechanisms on the binding energy and other properties such as the root mean square...

We describe a variational theory for incompressible ground states and charge gaps in the N=0 Landau level of graphene that accounts for the fourfold Landau level degeneracy and the short-range interactions that break SU(4) spin-valley invariance. Our approach explains the experimental finding that gaps at odd numerators are weak for 1<|ν|<2 and strong for 0<|ν|<1. We find that in the SU(4) inva...

If a magnetic impurity is introduced into a non-magnetic metallic environment, its spin interacts with the conduction electrons of the host. Below a characteristic temperature TK, this leads due to the Kondo effect to a non-magnetic singlet ground state, where the spin of the magnetic impurity is completely screened [1]. As soon as two or more magnetic impurities are in proximity to each other,...

Plant-soil feedback is receiving increasing interest as a factor influencing plant competition and species coexistence in grasslands. However, we do not know how spatial distribution of plant-soil feedback affects plant below-ground interactions. We investigated the way in which spatial heterogeneity of soil biota affects competitive interactions in grassland plant species. We performed a pairw...

We examine the height growth, diameter growth and below-ground allocation responses of mountain beech (Nothofagus solandri var. cliffortioides) seedlings to the experimental removal of root competition through root trenching and the addition of fertiliser within relatively intact-canopied mountain beech forest in the Craigieburn Range, Canterbury. Trenching and trenching combined with fertilise...

This paper summarizes the 3rd Book Structure Extraction competition that was run at the ICDAR 2013. Its goal is to evaluate and compare automatic techniques for deriving structure information from digitized books, which could then be used to aid navigation inside the books. More specifically, the task that participants are faced with is to construct hyperlinked tables of contents for a collecti...

of the Conference Program: Rapidly emerging economies such as China, India, Mexico, Brazil and South Africa are taking center stage in antitrust enforcement. Multinational firms must have regard to the competition systems of these and other developing nations when engaging in merger activity, collaborating with competitors, and pricing, distributing, and licensing their products. Competition au...

In this paper, we present a general description of the software architecture and algorithms to be used by the UC Merced team during the Virtual Robot Rescue Simulation Competition at RoboCup 2009. Building upon our good performance in the same competition last year, our framework and team description paper will closely resemble past work. Our goal is to concentrate on robotic cooperation and th...
