Repeated administration of an intravenous immunoglobulin containing antibody to hepatitis B e antigen (anti-HBe) and antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) but free of antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) before and after the inoculation of 10(4.9) 50% chimpanzee infective doses of hepatitis B virus (HBV) markedly prolonged the incubation period of HBV in experimentally i...

Hepatitis B e antigen-positive human serum was treated with 50-90% ethanol at room temperature for 1-60 min, then the antigenicity of S antigen (hepatitis B surface antigen, in a narrow sense) was determined by radioimmunoassay and the antigenicities of pre-S1 and pre-S2 antigens were measured by enzyme immunoassay. In addition, hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA in the treated serum was detected by p...

This study investigated whether conformal radiotherapy affects hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation, and the risk factors for HBV reactivation in patients with HBV-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Sixty-nine patients with HCC were included in this retrospective study. Before radiotherapy (RT), all patients underwent imaging examinations and some baseline examinations, including CBC, live...

Greenland remains a highly endemic area for hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. This is in sharp contrast to other modern societies, such as Denmark. To address this discrepancy, we investigated the natural history of HBV infection in Greenland by estimating the age-specific incidence of HBV infection, the proportion of chronic carriers, and the rates of hepatitis B surface antigen seroclearance...

A 72-year-old female negative for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and positive for antibody to hepatitis B surface antigen (anti-HBs) was diagnosed to have follicular lymphoma in 2006. Seventeen cycles of rituximab-based chemotherapy were administered over 23 months. Twelve days after the last cycle of chemotherapy, serum aminotransferase levels were elevated, and hepatitis serology tests r...

We compared hepatitis B virus (HBV) surface antigen, anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody, and HCV RNA quantification in frozen and freeze-dried serum samples to assess the usefulness of freeze-dried sera for detection of HBV and HCV. The results indicated that freeze-dried sera as well as frozen sera can be useful for serological and molecular biological analyses of HBV and HCV.

HBV infection remains a major global health problem and continues to be a common cause of liver-related morbidity and mortality in both immunocompetent and immunosuppressed individuals. Reactivation of HBV is a serious complication of chemotherapy/immunosuppressive therapy in patients with HBV infection. In this article, we aim to describe the diagnosis, prevention and management of HBV infecti...

BACKGROUND Coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) is common. Most studies have concentrated on the effects of chronic HIV infection on HBV infection; however, studies on the effects of acute HIV infection on HBV infection are especially important to elucidate the potential mechanisms leading to complications from HIV/HBV coinfection. METHODS We evaluat...

The human hepatoblastoma cell line HepG2 produces and secretes hepatitis B virus (HBV) after transfection of cloned HBV DNA. Intact virions do not infect these cells, although they attach to the surface of the HepG2 cell through binding sites in the pre-S1 domain. Entry of enveloped virions into the cell often requires proteolytic cleavage of a viral surface protein that is involved in fusion b...

An in vitro system for production of hepatitis B virus (HBV) was established by infection of human hepatoma (HepG2) cells. HBV particles obtained from the serum of a chronic hepatitis B surface antigen (subtype ad) carrier were used to inoculate HepG2 cells. HBV envelope and core proteins were synthesized de novo by the infected cells and secreted into the medium 3 to 6 days postinfection. Vira...
