In the framework of trace element analysis by Q ICP-MS in a simulated deep Callovo-Oxfordian groundwater, separation procedures based on extraction chromatography were developed to eliminate the high salt contents and to concentrate Zr and U simultaneously. Theoretical and experimental speciation studies showed the importance of adjusting the medium to HNO₃/HF (0.5 M/0.005 M) to guarantee the s...

Heart failure remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although depressed pump function is common, development of effective therapies to stimulate contraction has proven difficult. This is thought to be attributable to their frequent reliance on cAMP stimulation to increase activator Ca(2+). A potential alternative is nitroxyl (HNO), the 1-electron reduction product of nitr...

There is accumulating evidence for the existence of HNO in biological systems. Compared with NO (˙NO), much less is known about the chemical and biochemical reactivity of HNO. Kinetic and mechanistic studies have been carried out on the reaction between the vitamin B12-derived radical complex cob(II)alamin (Cbl(II)˙, Cbl(II)) with the widely used HNO donor Piloty's acid (PA). A stoichiometry of...

The chemical history of dust particles in the atmosphere is crucial for assessing their impact on both the Earth's climate and ecosystem. So far, a number of studies have shown that, in the vicinity of strong anthropogenic emission sources, Ca-rich dust particles can be converted into aqueous droplets mainly by the reaction with gaseous HNO(3) to form Ca(NO(3))(2). Here we show that other simil...

Hydride attack at a ferric heme-NO to give an Fe-HNO intermediate is a key step in the global N-cycle. We demonstrate differential reactivity when six- and five-coordinate ferric heme-NO models react with hydride. Although Fe-HNO formation is thermodynamically favored from this reaction, Fe-H formation is kinetically favored for the 5C case.

Atmospheric acidity as HNO,(g), SO,(g), and aerosol H + was measured on Allegheny Mountain and Laurel Hill in southwest Pennsylvania in August 1983. The aerosol H+ appeared to represent the net after H,SO, reaction with NH,(g). The resulting H+/SO:ratio depended on SOiconcentration, approaching that of H,SO, at the highest SOiconcentrations. The atmosphere was acidic; the average concentrations...

1. Passive steel wires were activated in a bath (Bath A) containing 70 v. per cent HNO(3) (in which they undergo prompt repassivation), and immediately transferred to a second bath (Bath B) containing HNO(3) of a concentration varying in different experiments. After varying intervals in this bath they were transferred while still passive to a third bath (Bath C) containing strong HNO(3) (70 or ...

BACKGROUND New therapeutic targets for cardiac hypertrophy, an independent risk factor for heart failure and death, are essential. HNO is a novel redox sibling of NO• attracting considerable attention for the treatment of cardiovascular disorders, eliciting cGMP-dependent vasodilatation yet cGMP-independent positive inotropy. The impact of HNO on cardiac hypertrophy (which is negatively regulat...

For over 90 years, nitroxyl (HNO) has been postulated to be an important reaction intermediate in the catalytic oxidation of ammonia to NO and its by-products (N2, N2O), but never proven to form or exist on catalytic surfaces. Here we show evidence from reactive ion beam experiments that HNO can form directly on the surface of polycrystalline Pt exposed to NH3via Eley-Rideal abstraction reactio...
