Objectives We studied the involvement of serum-complement (C') and oxidative stress in the hemolytic anemias Paroxysmal Nocturnal Hemoglobinuria (PNH) and Auto-Immune Hemolytic Anemia (AIHA), and the effect of Fermented Papaya Preparation (FPP), an antioxidant-containing yeast fermentation product of Carica papaya Linn. Methodology Normal human red blood cells (RBC) treated with the sulphydryl ...
The data presented here indicate that the C5 reaction step may proceed via the specific attachment of C5 to EAC1,4,2,3 and the formation of a hemolytically active C5 intermediate complex. During this process only a minor proportion (less than 4%) of C5 offered to EAC1,4,2,3 becomes bound, although the remaining C5 also participates in the reaction as evidenced by its inactivation in the fluid p...
Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is an intracellular parasitic infection that infects and multiplies in the macrophages of the liver, spleen and bone marrow. It is characterized by intermittent fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia and hypergammaglobulinemia. Anemia of multifactorial etiology is a usual manifestation of VL; however, Coombs positive hemolytic anemia has been infrequently reported i...
Immature erythroid cell precursors from 12- and 13-day fetal mouse livers were concentrated by differential antibody-mediated hemolysis. The effect of erythropoietin on these purified erythroid cell precursors was studied in vitro. Addition of erythropoietin stimulates erythroid cells to proliferate, and to differentiate to cells that actively synthesize hemoglobin. This erythropoietin-induced ...
A 20-year-old nonverbal patient with profound developmental disabilities was treated with intravenous piperacillin-tazobactam for respiratory infection. After 8 days, he became afebrile with normal pulmonary status, but his pulse remained inexplicably rapid (114/minute). Investigations revealed severe normochromic normocytic hemolytic anemia (hemoglobin: 40 g/L, reticulocytes: 9.4%, nucleated e...
1. At a temperature of 1 degrees C., C'2, C'4, and C'1 combine with sensitized sheep erythrocytes, while C'3 does not combine. 2. C'1, although combining with sensitized cells in the absence of C'4, is hemolytically inert unless C'4 combines previous to, or simultaneously with it. 3. C'4 does not combine in the absence of C'1. 4. Although C'3 is not fixed by antibody-sheep cell aggregates, it i...
Abstract Background: Hereditary red cell enzyme disorders are a group of Non-immune/Spherocytic Hemolytic Anemia, although these disorders are rare and they have not public health problems, the detection of these defects could help to physician in treatment and differential diagnosis. This study evaluated 5 enzymopathies in patients with Hereditary Non –immune/Spherocytic Hemolyti...
We have recently treated three patients with malaria who developed post malaria immune mediated hemolysis. These cases, seen with in a span of three month period (September 09 to November 09) form the basis of this report. Out of three patients, two were treated with steroids and both responded favorably.
A method is described for the colonial growth, in semi-solid medium, of erythropoietin-responsive erythroid cell precursors. The erythroid cell precursors were isolated by immune hemolysis from fetal mouse liver. Both the number of precursor cells triggered to proliferate and differentiate, and the size of the erythropoietic colonies formed, are directly dependent upon the concentration of eryt...
