Chikungunya infections were detected in Singapore among returning travelers who had visited friends and relatives (VFR) in India and Malaysia. These sporadic imported cases occurred over a year before the 2008 chikungunya outbreaks in Singapore, demonstrating the potential for introducing this emerging viral infection into new areas via VFR travel.

The clinical features, parasitology and prophylactic history of 67 patients who imported malaria to Northern Ireland between 1974 and 1983 are reported. P. falciparum infections were encountered more frequently than anticipated from current United Kingdom experience. The clinical implications of these findings are discussed.

Over a 2-month period, 43 of 143 participating general practitioners included 97 patients with 113 health impairments, mainly gastrointestinal problems (35%), respiratory tract infections (30%), and skin diseases (11%). Systemic febrile illness or imported tropical disease accounted for less than 4% of cases.
