We analyze spectral line shapes of hydrogenlike species subjected to fields of electromagnetic waves. It is shown that the magnetic component of an electromagnetic wave may significantly influence the spectra. In particular, the Zeeman effect induced by a visible or infrared light can be experimentally observed using present-day powerful lasers. In addition, the effect may be used for diagnosti...

The time-temperature effects of laser radiation exposure are investigated as a function of wavelength. Here, we report the thermal response of bulk tissue as a function of wavelength from 700 to 1064 nm. Additionally, Monte Carlo simulations were used to verify the thermal response measured and predict damage thresholds based on the response.

First protostellar cores are young stellar objects in the earliest evolutionary stage. They are hydrostatic objects formed soon after the central portions of star-forming cores become optically thick to dust emission. We consider their characteristics in the emitted radiation, and discuss their evolution with increasing mass of the cores. Particular attention is paid to detailed radiative and c...

In the history of earthquake thermal infrared research, it is undeniable that before and after strong earthquakes there are significant thermal infrared anomalies which have been interpreted as preseismic precursor in earthquake prediction and forecasting. In this paper, we studied the characteristics of thermal radiation observed before and after the 8 great earthquakes with magnitude up to Ms...

The experience of the pleasant heat of the sun in moderate climatic zones arises from the filtering of the heat radiation of the sun by water vapor in the atmosphere of the earth. The filter effect of water decreases those parts of infrared radiation (most parts of infrared-B and -C and the absorption bands of water within infrared-A), which would cause - by reacting with water molecules in the...

Most gases and vapours with a bipolar molecular structure absorb infrared energy. If such a gas is interposed between an object emitting infrared radiation and a thermocamera the gas will absorb some of the infrared radiation and thus cast a shadow on the thermocamera picture. In this assay it is possible to visualise the gas. This method had been used to study pollution with anaesthetic gases ...

We demonstrated that modulated infrared radiation can cause the resonant excitation of plasma oscillations in quantum well diode and transistor structures with high electron mobility. This effect provides a new mechanism for the generation of tunable terahertz radiation using photomixing of infrared signals. We developed a device model for a quantum well photomixer and calculated its high-frequ...

Ultrashort pulses of intense, coherent, and tunable far-infrared and mid-infrared radiation, achievable with freeelectron lasers and optical parametric amplifiers, provide unique opportunities to investigate low energy dynamics in solids. This paper reviews our recent experiments on bulk and quantum-confined semiconductors using such radiation. These experiments include: far-infrared spectrosco...

The beamline BL43IR at SPring-8 has been constructed as a beamline exclusively dedicated to the infrared spectroscopy. The beamline was designed to make use of infrared synchrotron radiation emitted from a bending magnet of 39.3m bending radius with the acceptance angle of 36.5(H) 12.6(V)mrad and to cover a very wide wavelength range from 500 nm (20,000 cm , 2.5 eV) to 100mm (100 cm , 12.5meV)....

It has been discovered that the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) proteins of Boidae (boas), Pythonidae (pythons), and Crotalinae (pit vipers) are used to detect infrared radiation, but the molecular mechanism for detecting the infrared radiation is unknown. Here, relating the amino acid substitutions in their TRPA1 proteins and the functional differentiations, we propose that thre...
