Immunocompromised individuals are susceptible to pulmonary Aspergillus infections, whereas invasive Aspergillus infection is extremely rare in the presence of normal immunity. A case of larynx-tracheobronchial-pulmonary aspergillosis in an immunocompetent 57-year-old female host who was successfully treated with amphotericin-B and voriconazole is reported here.
Treatment of most of the pulmonary mycoses has been unsatisfactory until the advent of a new antifungicidal drug, Amphotericin B. This has so far shown promise of being a useful addition to the meager stock of therapeutic weapons we now have available. Aspergillosis, and particularly pulmonary aspergillosis, has not been much of a problem in the past because of its rarity. This, however, is not...
OBJECTIVE To report a case of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis mimicking lung cancer with lung to lung metastases in ectopic adrenocorticotropic hormone syndrome (EAS). CLINICAL PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION A 60-year-old man suffering from hypokalemic alkalosis, hypertension and limbs paralysis was referred to our hospital. EAS caused by malignancy of lung was highly suspected due to multipl...
BACKGROUND Aspergillus is a common cause of invasive mycosis, especially in immunocompromised or immunosuppressed individuals. AIMS To study the incidence of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis and evaluate the predisposing factors and clinico-pathological manifestations. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Retrospective analysis of autopsy material from a tertiary care hospital. MATERIAL AND METHODS All au...
Chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis (CNPA) is a rare form of pulmonary aspergillosis. The radiological findings in CNPA are very diverse. We present a mildly imunosuppresive, elderly 71-year-old woman with the diagnosis of chronic necrotizing pulmonary aspergillosis presenting as transient migratory thoracic mass.
Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis is most commonly seen in immunocompromised patients. Besides, skin lesions may also develop due to invasive aspergillosis in those patients. A 49-year-old male patient was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. The patient developed bullous and zosteriform lesions on the skin after the 21st day of hospitalization. The skin biopsy showed hyphae. Disseminated skin...
Near-drowning, a relatively common event, is often complicated by subsequent pneumonia. While endogenous and exogenous bacteria are typical pathogens, rarely fungi are as well. We report a complicated case of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis in a 30-year-old man after a near-drowning event. We also review the medical literature for similar cases. All cases of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis af...
The existing guidelines regarding the management of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis do not recommend screening of the extra-pulmonary sites. Due to the fact that the presence of central nervous system (CNS) aspergillosis will influence treatment decisions regarding which antifungal to use and the aimed target concentrations of azoles in plasma, to be informed about dissemination of the infecti...
