We study transverse electron momentum distribution in strong field atomic ionization driven by laser pulses with varying ellipticity. We show, both experimentally and theoretically, that the transverse electron momentum distribution in the tunneling and over the barrier ionization regimes evolves in a qualitatively different way when the ellipticity parameter describing polarization state of th...

We investigate numerically effects related to “single-cycle” ionization of dense matter by an ultra-short laser pulse. The strongly non-adiabatic response of electrons leads to generation of a MG steady magnetic field in laser-solid interaction. By using two-beam interference, it is possible to create periodic density structures able to trap light and to generate relativistic ionization

We investigate the dynamics of double ionization of He atom by an intense near-infrared and an attosecond vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser pulse, which are either applied in sequence or at the same time. To this end we solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for a two-electron model atom interacting with the two fields. We compare the double-ionization yields and probability density distrib...

Ionization of an atom or molecule by a strong laser field produces suboptical cycle wave packets whose control has given rise to attosecond science. The final states of the wave packets depend on ionization and deflection by the laser field, which are convoluted in conventional experiments. Here, we demonstrate a technique enabling efficient electron deflection, separate from the field driving ...

Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization (MALDI) is a very widely used analytical method, but has been developed in a highly empirical manner. Deeper understanding of ionization mechanisms could help to design better methods and improve interpretation of mass spectra. This review summarizes current mechanistic thinking, with emphasis on the most common MALDI variant using ultraviolet laser e...

Many organic molecules have strong absorption bands which can be accessed by ultraviolet short pulse lasers to produce efficient ionization. This resonant multiphoton ionization scheme has already been exploited as an ionization source in time-of-flight mass spectrometers used for environmental trace analysis. In the present work we quantify the ultimate potential of this technique by measuring...

At the ISOLDE on-line isotope separation facility, the resonance ionization laser ion source (RILIS) can be used to ionize reaction products as they effuse from the target. The RILIS process of laser step-wise resonance ionization of atoms in a hot metal cavity provides a highly element selective stage in the preparation of the radioactive ion beam. As a result, the ISOLDE mass separators can p...

By using 2,4,6-trihydroxyacetophenone adsorbed to cation-substituted zeolite, laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry for six kinds of bioactive substances was carried out. The compounds, which were usually difficult to observe by conventional matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry, were ionized by cation adduction from the zeolite surface.

The introduction of electrospray ionization (ESI) and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) for the mass spectrometric analysis of peptides and proteins had a dramatic impact on biological science. We now report that a wide variety of compounds, including peptides, proteins, and protein complexes, are transported directly from a solid-state small molecule matrix to gas-phase ions ...
