We have experimentally studied the optical refractive index of few-layer graphene through reflection spectroscopy at visible wavelengths. A laser scanning microscope (LSM) with a coherent supercontinuum laser source measured the reflectivity of an exfoliated graphene flake on a Si/SiO2 substrate, containing monolayer, bilayer and trilayer areas, as the wavelength of the laser was varied from 54...

Micro/nanoparticle induced nearfield laser ultrafocusing and heating has been widely used in laser-assisted nanopatterning and nanolithography to pattern nanoscale features on a large-area substrate. Probing of the temperature, stress, and optical fields induced by the nanoscale nearfield laser heating remains a great challenge since the heating area is very small (~100 nm or less) and not imme...

Graphene has many promising physical properties. It has been discovered that local strain in a graphene sheet can alter its conducting properties and transport gaps. It is of great importance to develop scalable strain engineering techniques to control the local strains in graphene and understand the limit of the strains. Here, we present a scalable manufacturing process to generate three-dimen...

In this Letter, we present a passively Q-switched Yb:Y2O3 waveguide laser using evanescent-field interaction with an atmospheric-pressure-chemical-vapor-deposited graphene saturable absorber. The waveguide, pumped by a broad area diode laser, produced an average output power of 456 mW at an absorbed power of 4.1 W. The corresponding pulse energy and peak power were 330 nJ and 2 W, respectively....

We investigate near-degenerate four-wave mixing in graphene using femtosecond laser pulse shaping microscopy. Intense near-degenerate four-wave mixing signals on either side of the exciting laser spectrum are controlled by amplitude and phase shaping. Quantitative signal modeling for the input pulse parameters shows a spectrally flat phase response of the near-degenerate four-wave mixing due to...

We report evidence of nonequilibrium hot carrier extraction from graphene by gate-dependent photocurrent study. Scanning photocurrent excited by femtosecond pulse laser shows unusual gate dependence compared with continuous wave (CW) laser excitation. Power dependence studies further confirm that the photocarriers extracted at the metal/graphene contact are nonequilibrium hot carriers. Hot carr...

Since Geim and Novoselov’s successful production of high quality graphene, its unique properties have found a number of applications. But graphene is not an exotic chemical compound; instead, it is a sheet of graphite, one atom think. Before 2008, the only way to produce graphene was through successive pealing of graphite with scotch tape until graphite flakes as thin as 1 atomic layer were lef...

By virtue of their low mass and stiffness, atomically thin mechanical resonators are attractive candidates for use in optomechanics. Here, we demonstrate photothermal back-action in a graphene mechanical resonator comprising one end of a Fabry-Perot cavity. As a demonstration of the utility of this effect, we show that a continuous wave laser can be used to cool a graphene vibrational mode or t...

We report on Q-switched waveguide lasers on the graphene-based crystalline Y-branch platform. By applying direct femtosecond laser writing of Nd:YAG laser crystal, a surface waveguide splitter with Y-branch geometry has been fabricated with depressed cladding configuration. The Q-switched lasing operation at 1064 nm is achieved in transmission mode, by attaching a two-layer graphene on the reso...
