The aim was to report a rare case of isolated traumatic atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation without ligamentous injury. Management consisted of analgesia, sedation, and application of a halo skull traction device. After removing halo skull traction, full reduction and recovery were achieved without instability.

Injury to the carpometacarpal joints is rare. The strong ligamentous attachments and carpal bone alignment readily resist displacement. To the authors' knowledge, there are no studies evaluating postoperative recovery regimens of carpometacarpal fracture dislocations. The present study describes a postoperative hand therapy regimen that used a novel carpometacarpal brace permitting early mobili...

Fractures of the articular surface of the distal end of the humerus (i.e., of the capitellum and the trochlea) are rather uncommon injuries. Fractures of the capitellum account for 1% of all elbow fractures and about 6% of all distal humeral fractures. Fractures of the trochlea are usually encountered as part of more complex intra-articular fractures of the distal end of the humerus, disrupting...

Introduction: This study investigated the sport-related ankle injuries attending an accident and emergency (A&E) department during a one-year period. Methods: A total of 1,715 sports injuries cases attending an A&E department from 1 January 2005 to 31 December 2005 were prospectively recorded. Details of each classified case were recorded in a computerized record system by the triage nurse. At ...

Fractures of the lunate are rare injuries that usually result from high-energy trauma and are typically associated with other carpal and ligamentous injuries. The incidence of lunate fractures has been cited as 0.5% to 6.5% of all carpal fractures. These fractures are not frequently reported in the literature, and no consensus exists on the treatment of these injuries in the acute and chronic s...

BACKGROUND Ankle ligamentous sprain is common in sports. The most direct way to study the mechanism quantitatively is to study real injury cases; however, it is unethical and impractical to produce an injury in the laboratory. A recently developed, model-based image-matching motion analysis technique allows quantitative analysis of real injury incidents captured in televised events and gives im...

BACKGROUND Polytrauma patients often present with altered mental status, thus making clinical examination challenging. Due to its reliability for detecting traumatic injuries to the spine, computed tomography (CT) is generally the imaging study of choice when the mechanism of injury and/or preliminary exam suggests spinal injury. However, motion artifact may lead to false diagnoses. CASE REPO...

The ankle is a common site of sport injuries. These usually have their main manifestations at the ankle joint and are thus easily recognised. However, unstable ligamentous ankle injuries may be associated with a fracture of the proximal fibula which can dominate the clinical picture. This severe uncommon injury complex, known as Maisonneuve fracture, is easily missed and maltreated (Pankovich, ...

Free flap reconstruction of soft tissue defects in the distal lower extremity presents inherent challenges given the suboptimal vascularity of the distal limb, and continuous weight-bearing forces, movement, and friction. Successful repair in this anatomic region is even more difficult in the posttraumatic patient, as free tissue transfers must contend with additional constraints of possible co...

In a consecutive series of 30 hospitalized cervical injury patients, 18 proved to have widening of the prevertebral soft tissue space due to hematoma. The upper limit of normal width in 50 noninjury patients was used as a reference. Hematoma almost exclusively manifested at C1-C4 and proved to be closely related to fractures of anterior elements of the spine. Relatively small hematomas were enc...
