This report presents a 3.5-year-old boy who was hospitalized for limping. Medical history and physical exams were not suggestive for any definitive diagnosis. Laboratory and radiographic exams did not support any specific diagnosis either. Subsequently bone scan was performed and increased activity in the ankle due to cuboid fracture was incidentally observed.
A 4-year-old boy presented for further evaluation of persistent right hip pain of 2 months’ duration. Before the onset of the pain, he had been limping, favoring his right side. For several days before he was brought in for evaluation, he had had fevers and sweating in addition to the right hip pain. He had no history of seizure, trauma, nausea, vomiting, headache, change in appetite, or weight...
A limp is defined as a deviation from a normal age-appropriate gait pattern resulting in an uneven, jerky, or laborious gait. It can be caused by pain, weakness, or deformity as a result of a variety of conditions. Transient synovitis is the most common diagnosis. Other causes of acute limp include contusion, foreign body in the foot, fracture, osteomyelitis, septic arthritis, reactive arthriti...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Successful treatment of prosthetic hip joint infection (PI) means elimination of infection and restored hip function. However, functional outcome is rarely studied. We analyzed the outcome of the strict use of a treatment algorithm for PI. PATIENTS AND METHODS The study groups included 22 hips with 1-stage exchange for PI (group 1), 22 matched hips revised for aseptic l...
The effect of leg length differences on early clinical outcome after total hip arthroplasty remains uncertain. We performed a prospective study on 94 patients who were evaluated preoperatively and one year after surgery for clinical leg length differences, which were then compared with radiological measurements. The effect of leg length differences on walking ability, limp, pain and patient sat...
Intact abductors of the hip play a crucial role in preventing limping and are known to be damaged through the direct lateral approach. The extent of trauma to the abductors after revision total hip replacement (THR) is unknown. The aim of this prospective study was to compare the pre- and post-operative status of the gluteus medius muscle after revision THR. We prospectively compared changes in...
Gait adaptation is essential for humans to walk according to the different demands of the environment. Although locomotor adaptation has been studied in different contexts and in various patient populations, the mechanisms behind locomotor adaptation are still not fully understood. The aim of the present study was to test two opposing hypotheses about the control of split-belt walking, one base...
Interlimb coordination is critically important during bipedal locomotion and often must be adapted to account for varying environmental circumstances. Here we studied adaptation of human interlimb coordination using a split-belt treadmill, where the legs can be made to move at different speeds. Human adults, infants, and spinal cats can alter walking patterns on a split-belt treadmill by prolon...
gent and laborious classes of the community ; who, for the most part, can only purchase recovery by sacrifices more difficult of endurance than even the suffering consequent on disease. We know not a more painful spectacle than that of a poor wretch limping to a day's labour, of fourteen or fifteen hours duration, with legs thickened more from the effects of foul and chronic ulceration^ than fr...
