In this article, we delve into the properties possessed by algebras, which we have termed seeds, that map to big Cohen-Macaulay algebras. We will show that over a complete local domain of positive characteristic any two big Cohen-Macaulay algebras map to a common big Cohen-Macaulay algebra. We will also strengthen Hochster and Huneke’s “weakly functorial” existence result for big Cohen-Macaulay...

We introduce the notion of a projectively simple ring, which is an infinite-dimensional N-graded k-algebra A such that dimk A/I < ∞ for every nonzero 2-sided ideal I ⊂ A. We show that if a projectively simple ring A is strongly noetherian, is generated in degree 1, and has a point module, then A is equal in large degree to a twisted homogeneous coordinate ring B = B(X,L, σ). Here X is a smooth ...

A T-variety is an algebraic variety X with an effective regular action of an algebraic torus T. Altmann and Hausen [AH] gave a combinatorial description of an affine T-variety X by means of polyhedral divisors. In this paper we compute the higher direct images of the structure sheaf of a desingularization of X in terms of this combinatorial data. As a consequence, we give a criterion as to when...

Let ∆ be simplicial complex and let k[∆] denote the Stanley– Reisner ring corresponding to ∆. Suppose that k[∆] has a pure free resolution. Then we describe the Betti numbers and the Hilbert– Samuel multiplicity of k[∆] in terms of the h–vector of ∆. As an application, we derive a linear equation system and some inequalities for the components of the h–vector of the clique complex of an arbitra...

A class of finite simplicial complexes, which we call Buchsbaum* over a field, is introduced. Buchsbaum* complexes generalize triangulations of orientable homology manifolds as well as doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. By definition, the Buchsbaum* property depends only on the geometric realization and the field. Characterizations in terms of simplicial homology are given. It is proved that Buch...

In this paper, we discuss some necessary and sufficient conditions for a curve to be arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay, in terms of its general hyperplane section. We obtain a characterization of the degree matrices that can occur for points in the plane that are the general plane section of a non arithmetically Cohen-Macaulay curve of P. We prove that almost all the degree matrices with positive s...

In this paper we use "ring changed'' Gorenstein homologicaldimensions to define Cohen-Macaulay injective, projective and flatdimensions. For doing this we use the amalgamated duplication of thebase ring with semi-dualizing ideals. Among other results, we prove that finiteness of these new dimensions characterizes Cohen-Macaulay rings with dualizing ideals.

We study configurations of 2-planes in P4 that are combinatorially described by the Petersen graph. We discuss conditions for configurations to be locally Cohen-Macaulay and describe the Hilbert scheme of such arrangements. An analysis of the homogeneous ideals of these configurations leads, via linkage, to a class of smooth, general type surfaces in P4. We compute their numerical invariants an...

Björner and Wachs generalized the definition of shellability by dropping the assumption of purity; they also introduced the h-triangle, a doubly-indexed generalization of the h-vector which is combinatorially significant for nonpure shellable complexes. Stanley subsequently defined a nonpure simplicial complex to be sequentially Cohen-Macaulay if it satisfies algebraic conditions that generaliz...
