PACAP peptides are expressed and regulated in sensory afferents of the micturition pathway. Although these studies have implicated PACAP in bladder control, the physiological significance of these observations has not been firmly established. To clarify these issues, the roles of PACAP and PACAP signaling in micturition and cystitis were examined in receptor characterization and physiological a...

Currently, the most widely used and effective pharmacologic treatment for the overactive bladder (OAB) is administration of muscarinic receptor antagonists. This strongly suggests that acetylcholine plays some role in the aetiology of bladder overactivity. If one considers the classical picture of the involvement of acetylcholine in the human bladder, this seems surprising. Acetylcholine is the...

PURPOSE We assessed the influence of the medial frontal lobe on micturition after chemical stimulation. We also examined the relation between the medial frontal lobe and the rostral pontine reticular formation, which has a strong inhibitory effect on micturition. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 35 female rats underwent continuous cystometry. Bladder activity changes were examined after physi...

Both the physiological role of muscarinic receptors for bladder function and the therapeutic efficacy of antimuscarinic agents for overactive bladder syndrome are well documented. We investigated the effect of antimuscarinic agents with different subtype selectivity on urodynamic parameters in nonhuman primates and rodents and compared plasma levels of these agents between species. Anesthetized...

BACKGROUND Cauda equina syndrome (CES) is a rare neurologic complication of lumbar herniated disc for which emergency surgical decompression should be undertaken. Despite the common belief that the restoration of functions that are affected by CES can take several years postoperatively, follow up seldom exceeds the first year after surgery. Long term outcome of especially micturition, defecatio...

A PATIENT recently came under our care who suffered from angina pectoris which was precipitated by micturitioll. Because of this unusual clinical association and the striking similarity to a famous historical case of angina pectoris, the case history and limited laboratory observation are recorded in detail. Case History R. C., a 46-year-old Negro inale, was admitted to the Duke Medical Center ...

Brain nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) reportedly suppress the micturition, but mechanisms responsible for this suppression remain unclear. We previously reported that intracerebroventricularly administered (±)-epibatidine (non-selective nAChR agonist) activated sympatho-adrenomedullary system, which can affect micturition. Therefore, we investigated (1) whether (±)-epibatidine-induce...

Patients with a Pheochromocytoma usually present with intractable hypertension, postural hypotension, headaches and palpitations, with intractable hypertension being the predominant symptom. When the tumor is located in the urinary bladder, symptoms may be induced by micturition. Herein, we report a young patient with a urinary bladder Pheochromocytoma without hypertension or symptoms induced b...

In 202 men with urethral gonorrhoea (176 symptomatic and 26 asymptomatic) who had modified Thayer-Martin cultures taken before and within five minutes after micturition there was complete agreement between results of the two cultures. Micturition did, however, temporarily eliminate the discharge in 100 (56.8%) and make interpretation of Gram-stained smears more laborious.
