The resazurin assay utilising microtitre-plate, described by Drummond and Waigh in 2000, has been modified to achieve more accuracy in the determination of the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of natural products, including crude extracts, chromatographic fractions or purified compounds against various bacterial strains. This modified resazurin method is simple, sensitive, rapid, r...

OBJECTIVES To compare the in vitro activities of vancomycin and linezolid against methicillin resistant Staphyloccus aureus in our set up to help in formulating a better empirical treatment and reduce the emergence of vancomycin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. METHODS The study was conducted over a period of 6 months (1st July 2009-31st Dec 2009). Fifty Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus a...

According to current interpretive criteria, Neisseria gonorrhoeae isolates with ciprofloxacin minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of ≤ 0.06 μg/mL are considered susceptible. Intermediate and resistant MIC breakpoints have not yet been established but isolates of N. gonorrhoeae with ciprofloxacin MICs of 0.05 to 0.25 μg/mL have been associated with apparent treatment failure with a regimen ...

Commentary Background Reports of a gonorrhoea 'superbug' made the headlines last year following the description of a ceftriaxone-resistant i solate of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. 1 But is antimicrobial resistance a significant problem and what is the current reality of N. gonorrhoeae infection in the UK? Is gonorrhoea getting meaner? Anogenital infection with N. gonor-rhoeae has been highly responsi...

Clavulanic acid, a potent beta-lactamase inhibitor, reduced the minimum inhibitory concentrations of carbenicillin for 13 of 15 clinical isolates of Serratia marcescens by at least eightfold. The combination of clavulanic acid and carbenicillin also exhibited synergistic activity with gentamicin against 11 of 15 isolates tested, including 9 of 10 strains which were highly resistant to carbenici...

In this study, the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of AgNO3 against bacteria were investigated in a variety of microorganism culture broths. Broth- and light-dependent MIC values were observed and correlated negatively with nano-Ag speciation development. We advocate here the importance of broth and light standardization in Ag antimicrobial test.

Combined effect of ciprofloxacin (Ci) and amoxycillin (Ax) has been studied in vitro against 12 clinical isolates of S. typhi that showed Ci minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of > or =1 microg/ml. By agar dilution method, MIC values of Ax were 10-16 microg/ml for 11 isolates and 0.5 microg/ml for the remaining one isolate. The isolates, when treated with Ci and Ax in combination, showed fr...
