The title compound, C(24)H(26)O(3), was prepared by the condensation reaction of 4-ethoxy-benzaldehyde with cyclo-hexa-none. The mol-ecule has crystallographic mirror symmetry and exhibits a butterfly-shaped geometry, with a dihedral angle of 5.46 (1)° between the two benzene rings. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯π inter-actions help stabilize the crystal structure.

The reaction of ethyl acetoacetate with meta-cresol in an acidic ionic liquid yielded a complex mixture of condensation products. 4,7-Dimethyl-coumarin and the title compound, C(20)H(22)O(3), were isolated. The title compound shows chemical but not crystallographic mirror symmetry. The two aromatic rings are inclined at an angle of 73.55 (6)°.

Hydro-thermal reaction of NaSCN, piperazine, Zn(II) and 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid in aqueous solutions gave rise to the title complex, [Zn(NCS)(3)(C(4)H(11)N(2))].
