Barretts oesophagus represents the most significant risk factor for the development of oesophageal adenocarcinoma (OAC), although the majority of patients will not develop cancer. However, early detection of OAC and its precursors significantly improves outcome and underlines the importance of endoscopic surveillance programmes. Clearly there is a discrepancy between the small number of people ...
1 The practice of histopathology is still in the early evolutionary phase in many developing countries including Pakistan. As depicted vividly by Zubair et al. a vast preponderance of lesions which should be biopsied are actually never biopsied in this part of the world, and even many surgical specimens removed from the patient are not subjected to histopathological evaluation. Worse even, if t...
Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS) is the commonest soft sarcoma in kids, with alveolar and embryonal variants distinguishable by histopathology and, more significantly, molecular biology. RMS occurs intermittently a substantial proportion of cases without predisposing condition. Nevertheless, it well established that certain hereditary factors enhance likelihood developing RMS. Beckwith–Wiedemann syndrome...
A 65-year-old male with known hypertension and hypercholesterolemia sought medical attention because of a 3-month history of skin swelling on his upper back. Histopathology and molecular techniques were employed and identified an organism in the Onchocerca genus. This represents a very uncommon example of cutaneous infection by a zoonotic Onchocerca species.
We report a case of subcutaneous infection in a 67 year-old Cambodian man who presented with a 5-month history of swelling of the right foot. Histopathology was compatible with phaeohyphomycosis and the hyphomycete Phialemoniopsis ocularis was identified by the means of morphological and molecular techniques. The patient responded well to a 6-month oral treatment with voriconazole alone.
A case of primary cutaneous zygomycosis caused by Mucor circinelloides is described. Histopathology showed typical hyphae along with chlamydospores. The isolate was identified by molecular and phenotypic methods. The utility of sequence analysis of the internal transcribed spacer region is highlighted; however, further studies are needed to assess species genetic heterogeneity.
This review covers the histopathology and pathogenesis of non-infectious inflammatory diseases of the sinonasal tract, in particular, sarcoidosis, granulomatous vasculitides Wegener, Churg-Strauss), relapsing polychondritis, eosinophilic angiocentric fibrosis, chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal perforations. Molecular associations and mechanisms are emphasised to assist pathologists to put their ...

Tuberculosis was diagnosed in three flocks of sheep in Galicia, Spain, in 2009 and 2010. Two flocks were infected with Mycobacterium bovis and one flock was infected with Mycobacterium caprae. Infection was confirmed by the comparative intradermal tuberculin test, bacteriology, molecular analysis and histopathology. Sheep have the potential to act as a reservoir for tuberculosis.
