Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we demonstrate that the nucleation density of Fe islands on the surface of nanoscale Pb films oscillates with the film thickness, providing a direct manifestation of the quantum size effect on surface diffusion. The Fe adatom diffusion barriers were derived to be 204+/-5 and 187+/-5 meV on a 21 and 26 monolayer (ML) Pb film, respectively, by matching the kin...

This paper describes a strategy for designing a chemically anchored phospholipid monolayer that could be used as coating materials for biomedical implants. To make a chemically anchored phospholipid monolayer on the polymer substrate, we prepared the mono-acrylated phospholipid (1-palmitoyl-2-[12-(acryloyloxy)-dodecanoyl]-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine; acryloyl-PC) and the acrylated polymer (poly...

Coarse grained models of monolayers of amphiphiles (Langmuir monolayers) have been studied theoretically and by computer simulations. We discuss some of the insights obtained with this approach, and present new simulation results which show that idealised models can successfully reproduce essential aspects of the generic phase behaviour of Langmuir monolayers.

Reactions of NH4 in water solutions with self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surfaces result in the deposition of ammonia in the monolayers. Similarities between this and the soft landing of ions seen in low energy gas phase ion± surface collisions suggest that monolayers can be used as matrices to preserve species. Ammonia can be incorporated only into thicker SAMs such as those made from octadecan...

We report coverage and temperature dependent bonding distances of vacuum-sublimed pentacene (PEN) submonolayers on Ag(111) obtained by the X-ray standing wave technique. The average vertical bonding distance of 2.98 Å at room temperature for 0.50 monolayer (ML) coverage increases to 3.12 Å for 0.75 ML due to competing intermolecular and adsorbate-substrate interactions. In contrast, decreasing ...

Silicon may be unable to continue serving as the backbone for future technologies. The search for silicon replacements has led to the investigation of thin 2-D materials. Some of these materials are single layers of group VI transition metal dichalcogenides. Through mechanical exfoliation, these materials can be isolated and used to construct monolayer field effect transistors. A transfer proce...
