We present the synthesis and characterisation of naphthalimide-flavin redox sensor 1 (NpFR1), a novel flavin molecule that is almost non-fluorescent in reduced form, but oxidation gives rise to a 125-fold increase in fluorescence. Confocal microscopy experiments confirm that is sensitive to redox changes within living cells.

Here we report that at room temperature in acetonitrile after the reduction of the naphthalimide-site, a synthetic molecular thread undergoes a complete conformational change which makes possible an efficient conversion of chemical energy into mechanical work; such results point out the ability of the thread to act as a molecular device under electrochemical control.

Electron transfer (ET) states of 1-methyl-3-(N-(1,8-naphthalimidyl)ethyl)imidazolium iodide are responsible for its photophysics. Investigation of an ET state based on constrained density functional theory (CDFT) revealed that nonradiative decay from the ET excited state is mediated by the interaction of the iodine atom with the 1,8-naphthalimide or the imidazolium group.
