Neural tube defects (NTDs), such as spina bifida and anencephaly, are severe birth defects which result from failure of closure of the neural tube (the precursor of the brain and the spinal cord). In humans, NTDs affect 1 per 1000 pregnancies, with multifactorial aetiology suggestive of a combination of one or more genetic factors with contribution from environmental risk factors. The curly tai...
Neural tube defects (NTDs) in Hawaii between 1986 and 1997 were examined using data from a statewide birth defects surveillance system. The prevalence increased significantly over the twelve-year period. NTD prevalence did not appear to vary by place of residence. The relationship of type of defect, maternal age, and infant/fetus sex was similar to that reported in the literature.
Maternal folic acid intake in the periconceptional period is strongly related to reduction in recurrence and occurrence of birth defects involving the neural tube. Among the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) influencing the folate metabolism, the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene has been the one most exclusively studied. Many studies have reported significant association be...
Genetic variations affecting neural tube closure along the head result in malformations of the face and brain. Neural tube defects (NTDs) are among the most common birth defects in humans. We previously reported a mouse mutant called tuft that arose spontaneously in our wild-type 3H1 colony. Adult tuft mice present midline craniofacial malformations with or without an anterior cephalocele. In a...

Neural tube defects (NTDs) are severe malformations of the central nervous system caused by complex genetic and environmental factors. Among genes involved in NTD, cilia-related genes have been well defined and found to be essential for the completion of neural tube closure (NTC). We have carried out next-generation sequencing on target genes in 373 NTDs and 222 healthy controls, and discovered...
Association between neural tube defects (NTDs) and C677T polymorphism of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) gene was suspected, because the MTHFR gene codes for a key enzyme in folate metabolism. Its deficiency usually leads to significant reductions in plasma concentrations of folate, vitamin B(12) and methionine, whereas homocysteine levels are increased. We examined folate, vita...
Neural tube defects (NTDs) are some of the most common birth defects observed in humans. The incidence of NTDs can be reduced by peri-conceptional folic acid supplementation alone and reduced even further by supplementation with folic acid plus a multivitamin. Here, we present evidence that iron maybe an important nutrient necessary for normal development of the neural tube. Following implantat...
