Worldwide, acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in children under 5 years age. Viruses, including norovirus, rotavirus, enteric adenovirus, are the leading causes pediatric AGE. In this prospective cohort study, we investigated viral load duration shedding adenovirus stool samples collected from 173 (median age: 15 months) with AGE who presented to emergency d...

BACKGROUND Nosocomial outbreaks of norovirus infection pose a great challenge to the infection control team. METHODS Between November 1, 2009, and February 28, 2010, strategic infection control measures were implemented in a hospital network. In addition to timely staff education and promotion of directly observed hand hygiene, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction for norovirus was...

Human norovirus is a leading cause of viral gastroenteritis worldwide. Rapid detection could facilitate control, however widespread point-of-care testing is infrequently done due to the lack of robust and portable methods. Recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) is a novel isothermal method which rapidly amplifies and detects nucleic acids using a simple device in near real-time. An RT-RPA a...

Existing estimates of the incidence of infectious intestinal disease (IID) caused by norovirus are based on electron microscopy or reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Neither method accurately represents norovirus disease burden: Electron microscopy has poor diagnostic sensitivity, and RT-PCR has poor diagnostic specificity. In this study, viral load measurements were used...

OBJECTIVES To study norovirus gastroenteritis infection among residents and health care workers (HCWs) during an outbreak in a nursing home by investigating the attack rate and positive diagnostic rate for norovirus by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). METHODS All members in a Chang Gung Memorial Hospital-affiliated nursing home from November 17, 2006, to November 25, ...

Noroviruses (Caliciviridae) are RNA viruses with a single-stranded, positive-oriented polyadenylated genome. To date, little is known about the replication strategy of norovirus, a so-far noncultivable virus. We have examined the initiation of replication of the norovirus genome in vitro, using the active norovirus RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (3D(pol)), homopolymeric templates, and synthetic s...

We evaluated data from gastroenteritis outbreaks in Oregon to assess sensitivity of stool testing for norovirus and determine number of specimens needed to confirm norovirus as the cause. Norovirus can be readily confirmed if 3-6 specimens are collected any time ≤7 days after onset of diarrhea and for almost that long after symptoms resolve.

To determine whether the norovirus strain GII.17 recently detected in Maryland, USA, (Hu/GII.17/Gaithersburg/2014/US) is spreading globally, we characterized the genome. High similarity with the norovirus GII.17 that caused recent outbreaks in Asia indicates that the same strain was present in the United States during the 2014-15 norovirus season (winter).

We performed a case-control investigation to identify risk factors for norovirus infections among children in Vietnam. Of samples from 1,419 children who had diarrhea and 609 who were asymptomatic, 20.6% and 2.8%, respectively, were norovirus positive. Risk factors included residential crowding and symptomatic contacts, indicating person-to-person transmission of norovirus.
