In this work we propose a general approach for representing uncertainty measures in the framework of t-norm based logics. This approach is extended also to classes of measures like probability, possibility, necessity, lower and upper probability. We show that, under certain conditions, the logical consistency of a theory of uncertainty is tantamount to the coherence of a related assessment of r...

A fundamental problem of algebraic geometry is to determine which varieties are rational, that is, isomorphic to projective space after removing lower-dimensional subvarieties from both sides. In particular, we want to know which smooth hypersurfaces in projective space are rational. An easy case is that smooth complex hypersurfaces of degree at least n + 2 in P are not covered by rational curv...

Let F be a holomorphic foliation of general type on P which admits a rational first integral. We provide bounds for the degree of the first integral of F just in function of the degree, the birational invariants of F and the geometric genus of a generic leaf. Similar bounds for invariant algebraic curves are also obtained and examples are given showing the necessity of the hypothesis.

Recently, a great interest has arisen on studying difference equation systems. One of the reasons for that is the necessity for some techniques which can be used in investigating equations which originate in mathematical models to describe real-life situations such as population biology, economics, probability theory, genetics, and psychology. There are many papers related to the difference equ...

Moral requirements apply to rational agents as such. But it is a conceptual truth that if agents are morally required to act in a certain way then we expect them to act in that way. Being rational, as such, must therefore suffice to ground our expectation that rational agents will do what they are morally required to do. But how could this be so? It could only be so if we think of the moral req...

Today's corporate environment requires managers to be excellent decision makers. Their ability to make fast, widely-supported, and effective decisions will, in large part, shape the performance of their firms. In this article, we describe two cognitive systems that influence decision making. System 1 refers to a process that is fast, effortless, and intuitive. System 2 is a slow, controlled, an...

There are at least two distinct ways of conceiving of syntax: the set of rules that enable speakers and listeners to combine the meaning of expressions (compositional syntax), or the set of formal constraints on the combinations of expressions (formal syntax). The question that occupies us in this paper is whether all languages include a significant formal syntax component or whether there are ...
