We address the trade-offs among delay, loss, and bandwidth in the design of coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) delay lines. We begin by showing the convergence of the transfer matrix, tight-binding, and time domain formalisms in the theoretical analysis of CROWs. From the analytical formalisms we obtain simple, analytical expressions for the achievable delay, loss, bandwidth, and a figu...

This report describes the challenges in meeting the requirements for optical buffering devices in next -generation optical routers. Slow light and delay line buffering approaches are described and several recent results and issues are summarized.

A system for the rapid-scan (RS) acquisition of time-resolved nonlinear spectroscopic signals, capable of femtosecond resolution over a range of tens of picoseconds, is presented. Operationally, the system is based on a magnetically driven, commercially available velocity transducer that continuously scans a probe delay line relative to a fixed delay line while data are recorded on the fly and ...

We describe a methodology to maximize slow-light pulse delay subject to a constraint on the allowable pulse distortion. We show that optimizing over a larger number of physical variables can increase the distortion-constrained delay. We demonstrate these concepts by comparing the optimum slow-light pulse delay achievable using a single Lorentzian gain line with that achievable using a pair of c...

The lack of optical buffer is still one of the main problems that hinder the development of all optical network. The current works on this topic mainly focus on emulating optical buffers with fiber delay line (FDL). Recent advances have shown the feasibility of emulating many kinds of optical buffers, such as the First In First Out (FIFO) buffer, priority buffer, etc. The Last In First Out (LIF...

Optical Burst Switching proposes a future-proof alternative to the current electronic switching in the backbone. The involved optical buffers are implemented with a set of Fiber Delay Lines, and suffer serious performance loss, when compared to RAM. Various existing models trace this loss, but either lack generality, accuracy, or effectiveness. The optical buffer model we constructed is valid f...

Whispering gallery delay lines have demonstrated record propagation length on a silicon chip and can provide a way to transfer certain applications of optical fiber to wafer-based systems. Their design and fabrication requires careful control of waveguide curvature and etching conditions to minimize connection losses between elements of the delay line. Moreover, loss characterization based on o...

We propose and demonstrate a tunable photonic radio frequency notch filter. The filter has a single delay line architecture and incorporates a new wavelength-selective true-time-delay. The time delay in the feed-forward ioop can be varied by simply changing the optical wavelength resulting in a shift of the null of the filter response. Application in radar systems is discussed.
