Eosin Y, a long known dye molecule, has recently been widely applied as a photoredox catalyst in organic synthesis. Low cost and good availability make eosin Y an attractive alternative to typical inorganic transition metal photocatalysts. We summarize the key photophysical properties of the dye and the recent synthetic applications in photoredox catalysis.

A tris(2,2'-bipyridine)cobalt(II)/(III) based polymer gel electrolyte has been successfully applied in conjunction with an organic carbazole dye in the construction of stable dye-sensitized solar cells with an energy conversion efficiencies of 8.7% and 10% at 1 sun and 0.1 sun light intensity.

A novel donor-π-spacer-acceptor type organic dye (AK01) bearing a phenylenevinylene-conjugated system and a derivative of indoline donor was synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells. AK01 showed panchromatic TiO(2) sensitization with high overall conversion efficiency of 6.2% under AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm(-2)).

Organic solar cell dyes containing the most common anchoring group, cyanoacrylic acid, are shown to be photolabile and undergo photoisomerization. This may have significant consequences for dye-sensitized solar cells, as isomerisation competes with electron injection and leads to modifications of the dye and surface arrangement.

Lasing action in a fully organic dye doped flexible 1D random multilayer photonic crystal is reported. The emission energy can be modulated by varying layers thicknesses to fit the dye characteristics, thus showing the potential interest of such cheap materials in active devices for optoelectronic applications.

We have synthesized a highly efficient organic dye for a dye-sensitized solar cell; the overall solar-to-energy conversion efficiency was 9.1% at AM 1.5 illumination (100 mW cm(-2)): short-circuit current density (J(sc)) = 18.1 mA cm(-2), open circuit photovoltage (V(oc)) = 743 mV and fill factor (ff) = 0.675.

A novel class of organic D-pi-A dyes employing a N,N,N',N'-tetraphenylbenzidine (TPD) unit as donor was designed and synthesized for dye-sensitized solar cells, which achieved a solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency (eta) of 5.63% in preliminary tests as compared to 6.42% for N3 dye under the same experimental conditions.
