The virus-induced papillomas of cottontail as well as domestic rabbits regress completely within a few weeks when exposed to 5,000 r of x-ray irradiation. The x-rays do not immediately kill the papilloma cells, but lead to death by inhibiting cellular division and producing pathological changes in the cells which then continue to differentiate. The virus associated with the growths, however, no...

The Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1) protein binds to and activates DNA replication from oriP, the latent origin of DNA replication in Epstein-Barr virus. The crystal structure of the DNA-binding domain of EBNA1 bound to an 18 bp binding site was solved at 2.4 A resolution. EBNA1 comprises two domains, a flanking and a core domain. The flanking domain, which includes a helix that pr...

To determine the mechanisms of cell death in rhabdovirus-infected cells, we studied the infection of the epithelial papilloma of carp cell line with spring viremia of carp virus. Studies using electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and agarose gel electrophoresis revealed changes in cell morphology and DNA fragmentation indicative of apoptosis. The virus-induced apoptosis was inhibited in ce...

However, data on the efficacy of cidofovir in an immunosuppressive setting remain contradictory. We report for the first time on the promotion of the healing of recalcitrant warts in a patient with myelodysplastic syndrome with intravenous cidofovir treatment.

Three tumors initiated by well characterized viruses, but in which virus is not detectable by ordinary virological techniques, are discussed. The question of the possible state of the virus within these seemingly non-infectious tumors is considered, largely from the standpoint of findings with the rabbit papilloma virus. This agent in its natural host, the cottontail rabbit, is infective, can b...
