A short, 5-step total synthesis of (±)-3-demethoxyerythratidinone from a simple pyrrole derivative is described. Features include the formation of gram quantities of a key tricylic aziridine from a challenging photochemical cascade reaction through the use of flow photochemistry. The final step involved a highly unusual Heck cyclization whereby ligand control enabled efficient formation of the ...

The photochemistry of a phenyl and 1,2-diphenyl substituted sulfite ester is reported. The performance of photoreactions under relatively mild reaction conditions enables the detection of products that have not been observed in previous studies. It is concluded that, complementary to the initially proposed carbene intermediates, diradicals may also be considered.

Preface For an emeritus, recently resigned from his duties as a co-editor of the Advances in Photochemistry, it is a privilege to be asked to contribute to The Spectrum a report on photochemistry done at the University of Siegen after it was founded in 1972. Previous research of the author, not dealt with here, had developed along two very different lines: photochemistry of heterogeneous system...

We present a femtosecond pump-probe study of the primary events of nitrosyl chloride (ClNO) photochemistry in solution. Following 266 nm photolysis, the resulting evolution in optical density is measured for ClNO dissolved in acetonitrile, chloroform, and dichloromethane. The results demonstrate that photolysis results in the production of a photoproduct that has an absorption band maximum at 2...

To explore how the solvent influences primary aspects of bond breaking, the gas and solution phase photochemistries of phenol and ofpara-methylthiophenol are directly compared using, respectively, H (Rydberg) atom photofragment translation spectroscopy and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Approaches are demonstrated that allow explicit comparisons of the nascent product energy dis...

The use of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) to study the photochemistry of metal complexes is becoming increasingly important among chemists. Computational methods provide unique information on the electronic nature of excited states and their atomic structure, integrating spectroscopy observations on transient species and excited-state dynamics. In this contribut...

The superfamily of phytochrome (Phy) photoreceptors regulates a wide array of light responses in plants and microorganisms through their unique ability to reversibly switch between stable dark-adapted and photoactivated end states. Whereas the downstream signaling cascades and biological consequences have been described, the initial events that underpin photochemistry of the coupled bilin chrom...
