A new twin-roll continuous slag solidification process and heat recovery process from a slag packed bed was developed for utilization of the waste heat of steelmaking slag. Plate-shaped slag with the thickness about 7 mm was successfully produced in a pilot plant, and the sensible heat of the slag was recovered by blowing air into the slag chamber. However, the gas distribution inside the slag ...

In an attempt ot develop a one step process for the removal of H2S from sour gas, the engineering consideration were dealt with in two steps. In the first step it was attempted to derive the data required for establishing the design criteria for a pilot plant, by experimenting with a small bench scale.

Multicentre randomised trials are complex projects with many operational uncertainties. The embedding of a formal check upon study progress and viability at a pre-specified time point (sometimes referred to as an 'internal pilot') is becoming increasingly common within multicentre pragmatic randomised trials. However, it is worth considering this practice. We argue that most, if not all, multic...

The Scottish Vowel Length Rule (SVLR) – formerly ‘Aitken’s Law’ [1, 5, 6] – is a contextconditioned vowel length alternation that in Scottish and Northern Irish varieties of English coexists with the so-called Voicing Effect (VE, or ‘pre-fortis clipping’) [3]. It is known that SVLRlike alternations occur in varieties of English spoken in northern England close to the Scottish border [1, 4, 8], ...

Mahmood Parvazinia Mohammad Shahrokhi,

In this article several control schemes for a pilot scale polymerization reactor are proposed and one of them is selected as the most suitable design. The performances of proposed schemes have been compared through computer simulations. The controllers are PID and Chosen reaction is polymerization of methyl methacrylate which is highly exothermic.

The term 'pilot studies' refers to mini versions of a full-scale study (also called 'feasibility' studies), as well as the specific pre-testing of a particular research instrument such as a questionnaire or interview schedule. Pilot studies are a crucial element of a good study design. Conducting a pilot study does not guarantee success in the main study, but it does increase the likelihood of ...

This editorial introduces the new, online, open-access journal Pilot and Feasibility Studies. The journal considers manuscripts on any aspect of the design and analysis of pilot and feasibility studies, as well as protocols for pilot and feasibility studies, and discussions and reviews of methodological issues around the planning and reporting of such studies. These studies are generally carrie...

Colfax, WA, operates an aerated lagoon to achieve compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit, which currently requires biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS) removal. However, ammonia removal may soon be required, and Colfax is considering a nitrifying trickling filter (NTF) that would allow them to also maintain the lagoons. To ...

To reduce pilot contamination, a downlink precoding algorithm was put forward for Large-scale MIMO system. It set the Least Square (LS) criterion to the objective function, and then solved the precoding matrices with the Lagrange multiplier method. In the solving, it utilized not only the estimated channel information but also the pilot contamination information, which was acquired from some bl...
