Malassezia furfur, an opportunistic and lipophilic yeast, is etiologic agent of pityriasis versicolor and characterized by hypo or hyperpigmented scaly patches which appear principally in the trunk. Regarding the lipophilic characteristic of the yeast, this study was done to evaluate that dose hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia affect on incidence of pityriasis versicolor (P.V) or no...

Lipophilic yeast of the genus Malassezia (Pityrosporum) belongs to the normal flora of human skin and many warm-blooded animals. These fungi can produce a diverse range of diseases that the best known and most frequent of them is pityriasis versicolor, a chronic recurrent skin disease occurring primarily in tropical regions. The genus Malassezia has been recently enlarged to include seven disti...

Melanin-like pigment produced in vitro and in vivo by Malassezia yeasts has not been described before. Masson-Fontana staining confirmed accumulation of black pigment on the cell walls of L-dihydroxyphenylalaline (L-DOPA)-cultured Malassezia species. Black pigment was also observed in cells and hyphae from hyperpigmented patient lesions with culture-confirmed pityriasis versicolor and seborrhei...

We experienced an atypical case of pityriasis versicolor with a unique clinical appearance and undescribed mycological features. Although Malassezia sp. was cultured from the keratotic material, the fungal elements observed in the material were not readily identified as Malassezia. The diagnosis was established with the aid of immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies with the aetiologica...

The authors report a case of pityriasis versicolor circinata whose isolated etiologic agent was Malassezia sympodialis in a 34-year-old woman. The isolation and identification of Malassezia sympodialis were accomplished with modified Dixon's agar, and the molecular method used to confirm the species was polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis (PCR-RFLP).

The identification of one or several hypochromic patches (HP) on the skin is a key stage in the diagnosis of leprosy on dark skin. However, HP are often caused by other disorder than leprosy. A study to determine the prevalence and causes of HP among children was carried out in a rural area of Mali in November 2001. All children under 15 years of age in two villages in an endemic area were scre...
